It was quite funny watching the perplexed looks on their faces while for almost 45 minutes we had no power. I remember when I was a kid almost every time there was a big thunderstorm it meant we’d be sitting at the kitchen table playing Monopoly by the light of a kerosene lamp. Kids nowadays don’t know how good they’ve got it.

Now kids will play monopoly on their phones until it either dies or the power is restored

It seems like a lot of people have a standby generator now, too, which makes power outages a nonfactor. Lucky arse kids.

I remember back in the day when my maw-maw had a million candles in the house, but my paw-paw had the best flashlight money could buy back then, as he was NOFD. The battles over the candles and flashlight were great.

Can't tell you how many times I heard, "Jesus, Mary & Joseph" and "god damnit to helliny ha"...or whatever she was saying that I just never understood.

We lost power a couple weeks ago and it was my 6 year olds first time. I agree it’s crazy how rare it is now. My daughter walked around trying every light switch in the house, she just couldn’t believe it wasn’t gonna work. They understood why I’m firm with them about putting my flashlights back to certain spots now though, it was a dark night.

I don’t think I’ve lost power since 2006 but I might be wrong

My daughter did that exact same thing. It’s like her little mind could not process that nothing happened when she turned the light switch on.

2006 is when we moved in here. This was the first power outage I can remember that lasted more than a few seconds at most. Just read on Facebook that a transformer got hit by lightning. They’ve got it back up and running now. Think it was off maybe 45 minutes.

I grew up in an old damn house and we’d lose it occasionally. Never really bothered me in the winter. Master bedroom had a fireplace, so my parents would be in there while my brother and I would make a pallet on the living room floor by that fireplace and daddy would come in sporadically to check on us and keep the fire going. We’d have a pretty good time.

How the hell did your kids go this long without experiencing a power outage? My power goes out at least twice a year.

I remember when I had to walk 10 miles to school through the snow in the south Louisiana heat. And that was just one way.

Had shoes that had to be duct taped together and by the time I got to mile 2, the duct tape was already coming apart.

The struggle was real.

Didnt really realize how little the power goes out now vs in my childhood until this thread.

Went about a year ago for about an hour. The only time I can think of it before that is the tornados that knocked the power out for a week in 2011

Your post gave me some feels. All of my grandparents are gone but I can remember losing power for big storms like Andrew or just regular thunderstorms sometimes and they were always as calm as could be about it. To us losing power is damn near a catastrophe and they treated it as an excuse to get everyone around the table for a board game. I’d do anything to go back and have a few more minutes like that.

I guess because we have underground utilities.

It has gone out a few times before but it never lasts more than a few seconds until last night.

I’m pretty sure my kids would go into full “Walking Dead” mode if we lost power for three days.

We lost power for 3 days last summer and suffered through the heat the first night, but went to a hotel the next 2 nights.

Now anytime the power blinks my daughter gets excited and thinks we are going to stay in a hotel.

The things kids get excited about.
