I can get a kindle paperwhite for $110 and I think the cheapest iPad is around $300.
ETA we didn't really buy each other anything crazy for Christmas. Probably taking a nice trip over the summer.

There are plenty of tablets from the dirt-cheap Kindle to a top-end Surface Pro 4 that will do the job, but she's a woman, so just get the iPad. It has little to do with value, or practicality.
