Thinking of you - My father was an honest and good man - I still miss him. He would have won no awards for his parentage - he, too was an alcoholic all his life. Never a mean one - just not interested in me as his son. But I loved him absolutely and still miss him.
He taught me one thing by his example - honesty and competency and helping others. I loved that man and miss him so.
Cherish your thought of your father and his faults will diminish thru the years.
R,I.P. for your dad - and I am thinking of my own as I type this. Thank you.

Sorry for your loss. alcoholism is a living nightmare. how did he get sober? rehab? I think people are afraid of this treatment as they fear their job will find out.

He tried many rehabs that didn't work, once he found out I was pregnant last summer he decided to get his act together. He was broke and nothing to his name, so he went through the Salvation Army rehab program and it changed his life. It was the support he needed. Truly an amazing organization. After discharge they helped him find a place to stay, helped him get a job and he was sober almost 1.5 years. Very proud of him.

Sorry for your loss. Anyone who gives you any crap for this post isn’t worth worrying about.
It’s great he made amends and his last years were good.

No apologies needed HoustonChick.
I posted about my mom’s death earlier this year. It helps to talk and share stories with other people even if you don’t know us face to face.
Sorry for your loss and remember that your father (although flawed like all of us) will live on in you and your family.

OP,
I lost my dad in October. He was also an alcoholic in my childhood. He turned things around later in life and he and I really developed a great relationship. He was a lifer in the sales profession, and some of my fondest memories are calling him on long road trips and picking his brain about different customers. That and Georgia football.
He got the cancer diagnosis early this year and it was downhill from there. Cheers to him and cheers to your dad. Remember the best times.
