I play the same game with my kid. Then my dad comes in town and starts playing the same damn game with my son and it's the most surreal, absolutely insane moment of my life. They were just goofing around but I saw my whole childhood right there.
This is beautiful and I wish I had a decent dad, but will be damned if I am not that dad, pop pop.

Blessed you were.
I wish dad and mom could see my daughter. My dad would’ve made her a rocking horse and my mom would’ve made her dresses.

Awesome picture. Your dad sounds like the type of man who helped America be great. Hard working and down to earth. God bless your family

A wonderful tribute to a wonderful man.
Mine was born in 1927 and will be gone 14 years in January. He grew up poor without knowing it. After Uncle Sam got through with him, he got a job installing electricity in homes. For $40 you got a light switch and two outlets. The first one he did was for his mom. With Uncle Sam's help, he went to college, and never really left. He too liked to fish and he liked ice cream. He did the best he could with a sometimes rebellious and sullen son, who later came to appreciate his efforts and did have the good sense to tell him so.

Just buried mine yesterday. Hasn't quite all sunk in yet but he was very very tired so it was for the best.

The 24th of this month will be 11 years since we lost my dad to suicide. There is not a day that goes by that I don’t think about him. This time of year is the hardest because we would always be at the camp enjoying ourselves trying to kill a deer. It has gotten easier through the years but will always hurt . I wish my all my kids would have gotten to know him.

You’re a fortunate son.

What a great post. I've no idea who you are but I felt better after reading about your dad and feeling the pride and love you have for him.

My dad has been gone 25 years as of November 6th. We buried him on my birthday.
I think about him every day. He was a fine father and a good example of someone who worked hard his entire life to provide for his family.

My dad's been gone 27 years. He was of that same generation, born 1931. He was a mechanic his whole life, even when drafted he was switched from corps of engineers to transportation Corp when the army found out about his day job.
My grandpa was born in ‘31 also and is similar to many of the men mentioned in this thread. He’ll turn 90 this week and I’m trying hard to get back to Louisiana to spend the holidays with them. I’m not prepared for when the inevitable happens

I lost my Pops in 2017. When I tell people the old (what seems like) cliche line, "The pain will fade with time and you will remember the good times", your post is exactly what I mean by that. Those memories and stories you will remember and cherish forever, and every time you or your loved ones tell them, you will be keeping his memory alive.
It sounds like he was a damn fine man. Thanks for sharing!

My mother died 1 year ago this past Friday (14th). Makes you do a lot of reflection.

As cheesy as it may sound, if you ever watch the children’s movie Coco, it will hit you like a ton of bricks. The premise of the movie is the Mexican holiday Day of the Dead. Your post reminded me of that. When we speak their names, talk about them, and remember them with friends and family, we keep them alive.
