This isn’t that outlandish. My grandparents did this and I never felt anything but overwhelming love from either side. My dads parents sometimes would sneak me a $10 right when they got to my house or something when they visited (which after I was 5 years old was once maybe twice a year coming from FL to VA) and now as an adult my grandma likes to mail me some candy every now and then.

My moms mom can’t afford to do any of that because she makes horrendous life choices. Thankfully my mother and I like to think myself did not inherit this trait

We loaned my BIL $5750 to buy a car when they needed help. Never paid back a dime.

We asked about it a year or so later, and the response was "we knew you had the money, we had no plans to pay you back".

What I would do and what I did do. Was start a fund and load some ETFs in it (ARKK, ARKQ, GLD, XLK) then Put a few bucks in from time to time.

That's my graduation present along with planned info on money management. Had I had this at 18. I would be a OT baller now.

Exactly!
$20 or some shite, I'd be annoyed but not angry.

$1,000 is insane.

It was $5750, I went to the dealership and paid for it. Where I went wrong was not putting it in my name, but I trusted him. Never again.

Never trust anybody that isn't willing to finance something as low as $5K

In our home, we don’t pay for grades. When they were in elementary school, we’d get a treat when reports cards came.

And Who knows who would end up with the money even if you gave it to her.

Should you want to do something to help her, put a little money aside for her for college/trade school/etc.

Just a thought.

I've always felt like over-rewarding kids with money is a sign of a guilty conscience for not giving them the affection/time they deserve and really want.

My parents were well off but the only reason I ever got an allowance was so I could learn to manage money myself. Otherwise even though my dad could have afforded it he never would have just given us free money but he forced a huge percentage (it seemed like at the time) into savings and wouldn’t budge an inch if we wanted something that we couldn’t afford. So if I wanted a cool video game I better be saving up for a few weeks or months to get it.

Exactly. You didn't get that money by giving it away on stupid things

He wouldn't have qualified for financing. We got a sob story about trying to be a better person, do better, be more responsible, etc. We thought he was sincere.

I learned an expensive lesson. Never again.

Yep. C’s cancelled A’s in our report card reward game.

Yes, just throw money at the child. THAT's the answer to poor parenting.
