You should have had something binding on giving her money. That can all be considered a "gift" and you pay back child support on top of everything else.
Seems better life choices need to be made....
Protect yourself? Here's a thought pay the damn money, maybe discuss things and see if you two can get something in writing that is legal and binding, otherwise you'll pay what the state says you will pay.

Explain this exactly the way you did here to a lawyer. They’ll ask you for 7000 retainer. Later they’ll need 5000 more. Plus you’ll be on the hook for ~ 1000 month just for the first born.
