I think it was an A&P, there was definitely a grocery store there when I was there

Sadly the current PC mob would never let our stadium be called this, but I always thought this would have been the most distinct and badass moniker for Tiger Stadium. Would have separated us from Clemson and Cali. And I guess Bayou Bengals would have been cool too.

Taco Bell

Began the demise of my beloved Pedro's. I loved that extra meat, extra cheese burrito.

Didn’t the sports owner also own “Mike’s”—bar around Sherwood Forest?

Yep, the guy who you are replying to is wrong. The Taco Bell burned completely down in the Spring of 2000, sat around in ruins for a year before the city condemned it, and then it finally ended up getting removed. And he's also wrong about it being converted into a Lyman White's Buffalo Wings Express. Lyman's was actually on the other side of the street and wasn't even located in the 2700 block like Taco Bell was.

just about everything north of campus off Highland was a combat zone

That was the area I imagined when Dash Riprock sang My Neighborhood is a DMZ.

Went in that strip mall record store when headed out on a long road trip. Bought new cassettes Eric Clapton Journeyman and Don Henley The End of the Innocence. Played them both over and over.

Yep. In college I merely disliked Billy. It took me another 6 years to truly hate him. His Joey's Village venture along with Joey DeStefano was a shite show . He ripped off a few investors to the tune of 6 figures and then disappeared and closed the restaurant after about 6 months....As a New Orleans Asst DA I called in some favors from retired cops to track him down since I was very good friends with the major investor.

Dash Rip Rock even had an album called "Tiger Town," which of course is what everyone used to call the "Northgate" area back in the old days.

They probably wrote "My Neighborhood Is A DMZ" given the names of some of the establishments in the area. Around that time there was an apartment complex on West Chimes Street built with some questionable building materials (wooden 2x4s adorned the outside of the building) that had the misfortune of being formally named "The Ghetto." I never knew anyone who lived there, so I can't attest to what kind of amenities that apartments with a name like that had inside. There was also The Casbah almost directly behind it (must have served Mediterranean food). A few years after that there was a restaurant called Chinese Bandits closer to where Highland Coffees is.

Pretty sure there was an A&P in the main strip

Yep…. Definitely. We used to cruise the meat department looking for expired bargains to throw on the grill every weekend.

Separate but somewhat related….
Remember the Carlotta St Halloween party every year? Legendary.

It was the longbranch before Murphy. There was a Swiss Colony cheese shop. And no one mentioned the Salvation Army Drop Box where we would chunk a couple of freshman drunk pledges.
