re: Murder at Wit's Inn

Several months ago, someone I know went to Brocato's with his wife, daughter, and granddaughter on a Saturday night. As usual, Brocato's was crowded and a line formed on the sidewalk. My friend said that there was large crowds congregated on the street, neutral ground, and sidewalk outside Wits and the Red Door. People riding motorbikes and ATVs up and down the street, speeding and popping wheelies. And even people on horses riding down the sidewalk. His wife, daughter, and granddaughter became frightened and they left, as did many other patrons.
Back in the day the Italian Neighborhood Protective Committee from Brocato's and Venezia's would have put a stop to these thugs interfering with their business.

That exact night was featured in a NOLA.com story, and NOPD has somewhat cracked down on that.

Truer words never spoken. CSB, but on one my parents' first dates, they were at Venezia. They were told that their meal was paid for, but they had to box up the rest of their meal and leave, if they would be so kind.
Carlos Marcello was in the back and waved at them. He wanted the restaurant to himself. They waved back, said thank you, and gtfo.

It’s gotten tiny bit better, but a few months ago you couldn’t drive down Carrollton at night without people just walking out in front of you going between Wits Inna and Red door. Also a ton of cars/ATV’s just parked in the street and cops standing in the neutral ground doing nothing just waiting for something serious to happen. It’s gotten somewhat better but still a ridiculous situation some nights.

We used to live on Iberville and would walk over to Brocato’s for a treat, or Revel for a night cap; never any issue with Wit’s. A few months ago, on a whim, we decided to go have a couple cocktails at Revel after dinner. When the Uber dropped us off I was like WTF. Spilling out into the street, on the neutral ground. Definitely a different demographic.

Probably been there about a dozen times since the 90's.. It always seemed to be on a Saturday night and there was the tranny sitting at the bar. He would wear a big hat that covered his face. Some the girls in our crowd would want to talk to him. Stupid drunk women wanted to be "friends".
We never had any trouble and usually had a good time. They had TV's at the tables around the bar which was nice for sporting events. The pizza wasn't bad either.. It's been about 10 years since I have been and it sounds like it has "changed"..

Used to be the taxi drivers' bar.
That's not even really a demographic that exists anymore. I guess it's a similar fate of the demographic that used to patronize Wit's Inn.

NOPD has started to crack down but I think this is going to be the event that ultimately shuts it down.
It’s ashame, because Witt’s was once a cool spot, but the new ownership has no respect for the neighborhood or his workers apparently.

Dammit, I love their pesto wings
ETA: Apparently, it’s been a while since I’ve been there. Totally different crowd now according to this thread

If you’re at a bar at 11pm on a Sunday night, you have some serious issues

Idiot. Now he is going to lose his conceal carry permit.

Why? I know plenty of people that go out on Sunday nights because they are always off of work on Mondays.

I expect a security guard getting murdered will put them out of business one way or another.

Understand where you are coming from, but ownership matter a ton. Outside of parking I've never seen any issues at Neyows, Bayou Beer/Wine Garden, or even Wrong Iron. All of those places with exception of Neyows have very diverse crowds.
What is happening at Wits Inn and Red Door is primarily due to ownership that can't keep their patrons under control.
That said it was security guard that was killed trying to keep a drunk guy out of Wits Inn, so maybe they were trying a little?

Both Neyows and BBG have had issues over the last couple of years. Both have had shootings right outside within the past year-ish. On a lighter note, it also takes fricking forever to get a drink at BWG because of so many people ordering complicated, fruity sweet cocktails instead of just beer or wine.

That place used to be a cool hangout. Sadly, the "culcha" took over and the typical animals in New Orleans have ruined it.
