You only do it if you're pulling up on a pileup and driver has definitely seen it. Your odds of getting plowed into are highest when you're at the back of the traffic jam.

I drive like 35k miles a year for 10 years now. I've had LOTS of time to study up on this

Eta: I just thought about it, I'm right at 50k this year...

No, going to be a few days. Have to do inspections once they clear everything.

51 appears open, but expect traffic

You might want to stay off our interstate system for now. You never know what could happen next on I12 or I10.

Coworker of mine who drives that bridge every day passed through there about thirty minutes before. He said that he was doing 60-65 or so and could barely see at that speed. Said people were blowing by him at 80+. Sad but not surprising what happened.

What was he doing 60-65 for if you can’t see?

He could see well enough at that speed. It was the people doing 80 that were the problem.

A friend of mine's theory to solve all traffic issues is to totally remove all guardrails and speed limits. I like his thought process.

It’s like the theory to prevent head injuries in football. Remove the helmets. Self preservation takes over.

According to the list linked below, today's pileup was the sixth highest number of vehicles involved in the US since 1990.

Actually there is a state that has no speed limits. I think it is Montana. You never hear of wrecks like this insurance is not high there. Some countries even eliminated speed limits noting it did more harm than good. You want to put Morris Bart out of business? Eliminate speed limits. Insurance rates will drop.

There is no way you are this unaware. Montana is about 3 times bigger than Louisiana and has less than a million people living there.

Lets put this in perspective. Draw a circle on the ground and put 10 hot wheels inside the circle. Take another hot wheel and roll in straight down the middle of the circle.

Then draw a circle thats 3x as big as the first circle and remove 4 of the hot wheels, then roll a car straight down the middle. Which circle are you more likely to hit another hot wheel?

On the surface, this seems almost reasonable.

But when you thing about it the analogy falls apart.

Because driving isn't just cars randomly flying through circles with cars randomly placed.

Driving takes place mainly on roads.

Montana has a lot less cars and open space and less population, yes.

They also probably have a lot less morons that can't drive.

Which Louisiana has in droves.

I'd say it's more to to with the drivers .
