I was thinking the same, why in the world does he just barge in there? Shooter was positioned at the top of the steps firing away.

There was a report of a body/unresponsive woman on the garage. I think they were trying to make sure this a-hole didn't have time to kill anyone else.

I don't know that they knew anyone was in the house. They just got a call because of the body in the garage.

Right. I applaud their bravery, and there’s no safe way to enter a house guarded by a gunman waiting for you.
The damned thing of it all is that once they know there is a gun, then the hostages are pretty much dead, because in the name of safety the cops won’t go in.
Please correct me if that’s not true.

Prior to some of the movie theatere shootings this was policy I believe. It changed when delayed entry gave time to kill more folks. (I think.)
