I had one on my back so I was fully in the tube . The procedure was only about 20 mins. I closed my eyes and they gave me a weighted blanket. I was so relaxed.

I had one done for my neck. I had to go two rounds because I was swallowing too much

Not sure if that was a nervous tick or unavoidable phlegm.

Had several over the last few months. I just close my eyes and chill out, but I can see how it could affect folks.

I’m a practicing radiologist. I still get a little claustrophobic when I have an MRI.

I never knew I was claustrophobic until I had my first MRI. It was a coffin with jackhammers.

This is exactly it. I feel like I could handle it but once the noise started, it made me fricking nuts. Its loud as all hell. It is like they are trying to make you go insane.

This was my experience...was just glad to get some rest during the work week.

Used to think I was claustrophobic until I bought a house built in 1902, which only had a wiggle space underneath. When gas came down our street we wanted gas appliances, logs, etc., but when any plumbing contractors came out they looked at that crawlspace and said no way and nobody bidded the job. So I figured out steel pipe plumbing and got over my fears. Put 140' of steel / copper pipe under that sucker and it would hold 60 lbs of pressure.

I've done two, and was fully in the tube on both. I'm claustrophobic, but only if I can't move at all. I just put the earplugs in and used the machines noise as white noise to doze off. I found if I laid there staring at the plastic wall/roof whatever, it started to bother me, though.

I'm a long time MRI Tech/parent. One of the first thing I ask my claustrophobic patients is if they have young kids. If they say yes I say my advice is to enjoy the break and take a nap. Probably works on about 90% of my patients to get them through without sedation or anything. One of the biggest problems is most MRI techs are lazy and do not talk to patients on the intercom so the patient thinks you left and went to Taco Bell or something which makes them panic. Ask your MRI tech to talk to you on the intercom during the scan. I also allow one friend or family member to join them in the room as long as they don't have any unsafe implants.

Have had a couple and I suppose it wasn't too bad because I don't have anything good or bad to say about the experience. Just make sure you go to the bathroom because it's 35-40 minutes in a cold room

it happens in enclosed MRIs so don't beat yourself up.

I typically fall asleep during an MRI as the banging noise coupled with a cold room makes me drowsy.

try out an open MRI and you should be just fine.

Only had a problem when the discs they were doing scans on started causing severe pain from the way i was positioned. My leg and foot went numb. I literally thought i was losing blood to my foot to the point of no return. I was in there for a crushed cervical/upper spine. i have a messed up lower spine too though, so i didn’t want to cause more problems to that.

But I was too embarrassed to say anything, so i would wiggle my toes just to keep blood or nerve flow or whatever. I didn’t want to lose the use of my foot. Lol.

Was completely defeated the rest of the day. I consider myself to be a strong man. Have gone through some hell in life but man, I felt like a baby and was pretty embarrassed to tell the tech I just can't do it.

Has nothing to do with strength of character, anyone who has been in one who says they were not uncomfortable is either lying or a rare individual. I have had several and none have been pleasant but I managed to get through them basically by meditating. Given the precautions they provide before hand I would posit that your reaction is not at all unusual. Don't beat yourself up, its a common reaction.

I have fallen asleep in one before. I basically meditate in them and if I am fortunate I am unaware I am in the thing. That is a learned technique though and not something one can just do without some practice.

i just got out of my first one. having severe dizziness and headaches for the last 2 years and it keeps getting worse. catscan showed no brain tumors so to the traveling mri bus i went.

the tube was about as big around as a trash can, and i'm so bad claustrophobic that flying itself doesn't bother me: it's being crammed in a tube for hours with hundreds of people.

he told me it'd be 15 minutes on my brain scan, pull me out, 30 minutes on my inner ear scan, pull me out and inject me then go back in for 20 minutes for inner ear, pull me out then go back in for 15 more for another brain scan. i was strapped in with a helmet rig on, and people in line behind me- so my margin for pussing out was very thin.

it was awful. i liked-to-of lost my damn mind. he shot me up in there the first time and i almost passed out. had to stop in the middle of the first 30 minute inner ear scan because I finally dosed off, even though i was trying not to, because i knew if i came to i might flip out, and that's exactly what happened.

my claustrophobia goes way back to my childhood; if i have to go back i'm almost certain i'll have to be drugged up.

Went to sleep on mine. Being a journeyman pipefitter at the time, I was used to being inside of paper machine dryer cans and steam boilers to repair and inspect foot valves and
water tubing.
