I've had 2. First one I had was very unpleasant but somehow I made it through. So the second time I opted for benzos and it was much better. I think the benzos definitely helped but the second machine was also much quieter and more comfortable

It helps to ask the tech share how long each scan is and then count the seconds in my head. First scan might be 1:30 so I count to 90 and it's often over before I get to the time. Then they'll tell me the next time, etc. Helps because a lot of the frustration is not knowing how long you've been in and how much longer you have, and the counting helps mind focus on something other than discomfort.

I’ve had several over the years. I normally don’t have problems. But They can be rough if you’re claustrophobic.
Usually places will ask if you need Valium before going. Don’t beat yourself up about it though, as it is very common. Next time you gotta do one take a Xanax or some Valium and you’ll be fine. I take one now whenever I got to get one (just to be safe) and I just nap during it.
45 min is a long time now a days for an mri. I know some machines are older and take that long but a lot of places have machines now that take about 20 minutes.
The worst is when you have to get one done in a weird spot and they have to put you in an uncomfortable position in order to get the scan done. Trying to stay still for that is a bitch.

So it was on THIS day that you discovered you were claustrophobic.
I've had a bunch. I just about fall asleep in them I get so relaxed. Crazy how the brain works.

Yes. Wasn't bad at all.
They're trying to help you- not kill you.
But I get it- it's an unusual thing to go through, albeit briefly....

I have had one and I'm not claustrophobic. With that in mind my heart started racing when I first went in it. The tech said "you need to slow your breathing" and I said "no shite". Once I slowed my heart down I ended up falling asleep.

Yes. My wife told me I was going to hell when I die right before I went in.

No big deal.
Had many full body MRI if that the one you drink barium for, Pet scan, and x rays all in the same day.
Pet, kind of sucks as they put a chemical in you and you have to stay still.
I had to get the full body scans.
Drinking the Barium, put some up your buttocks, and waiting to get an MRI is the worst part when I went to MD Anderson. I had a 1 pm one and it got delayed to 6 am due to one machine was down.

Some people are scared of needles, spiders, heights, etc. Some people are scared of confined spaces.

Ive had quite a few. I’d rather be playing video games, but the last one due to a work injury (back) I fell asleep during the scan. I’m on the low end of the spectrum for claustrophobia.

If the MRI isn’t on your head/neck, try tilting your head back and looking out the end of the tube. Doesn’t always work depending on your height, but it opens up the envelope and provides some relief. Drugs work too if time/schedule allows.

I sell MRIs so here are some thoughts on MRIs and in the BR area in general:
1. 70cm gantry is the largest bore on the market for 1.5 and 3T. Siemens has the shortest magnets, which allows for more head out exams. Lower back studies and down towards the feet, your head will be out of the MRI.
2. Open (C-shaped)magnets have a face space of 54cm so if you’re doing a neuro study in a head coil, good luck.
3. Open magnets take way too long for a study and the images suck. I would never suggest anyone doing a study on an open MRI. I used to sell them.
4. Siemens magnets are the fastest in terms of study times and provide the best images. Siemens markets share in the U.S. is about 65%.
5. Most tricked out MRI in BR is at BR General Bluebonnet. Really nice. Woman’s, The Lake, Lake Childrens and Ochsner all have Siemens MRIs. The Lake and Ochsner have the newest magnets and are the fastest of the bunch.
