I call my doctor by his first name.

My barber has a JD. Still waiting for the day for her to drop some "Esquire" line of douche on me. Been two years, hasn't happened.

do you "correct" people if they call you "Mr" or "Mrs" instead of saying "Doctor"
The only place that I wanted to be called Dr.__ is in my clinic or at the hospital. When I'm away from those places, people can just call me by my first name.
IMO, Dr. is way over used, does not carry the significance that the title once held. I will use M.D. behind my name on formal letters and signatures.

imo it's kind of a douchey, insecurity issue to make a point of it, but whenever I'm introducing someone to my kids that is "titled," I'll introduce them as Dr., Col., Capt. so and so, and because I try not to hang around with douchey, insecure types, the introducee will always say "nice to meet you, please call me(insert first name)"
or God

Reminds me of the old Seinfeld episode where George wondered aloud in the waiting room why people call chiropractors "Doctor."
Seinfeld is the GOAT.

I thought the only people who boast about being called "Doctor" were quasi doctors like dentists and chiropractors.
Real doctors don't care.
Real doctors don't care.

You work hard for that title. My wife (No pics) will have her Ph.D soon and you had better believe she's going to make everyone call her doctor in the beginning. I might just shoot myself now.
Phd's aren't real doctors

years ago we had a medical emergency on a flight(pretty common occurrence,) and a PA was made asking if a doctor was on board, a guy identifies himself as Dr. so and so and asked how he could help, turns out he was an English professor, now we ask if there is a physician or health care professional on board

I actually got a pretty good glare from a 4th year resident when I accidentally said, "hello, are you Mr. Garter?" Instead of doctor. Now I call everyone doctor, even the nurses, sometimes the patients.

Only M.D.s are to be addressed as doctor outside of the work area. Despite that, they shouldn't correct you.

I always introduce myself by my first name to my patients and am fine if they refer to me that way. Some do call me mister and that's ok to. It's still a sign of respect.
I once met a retired MD at a social function that introduced himself as Doctor Hammell. I responded surprised that his parents named him so unusually. As he obnoxiously began to explain I just winked and walked off. I don't need to know jerkoffs like that.

Judge Reinhold approves of this message.

LOL, actually MD's are not the real doctors, they are simply practitioners not researchers.

I was randomly watching a few different shows on tv this past week. Multiple times I saw this happen and I guess I never thought about it. I don't remember it ever happening to me,
Most of the time I have seen this on TV it was because the "Doctor" was interacting with a condescending douche bag. Maybe it never happened to you because you're not? Just speculating, don't know who you are or if I've ever met you.

I don't have the doctorate (PhD) that people associate with (MD) traditionally, so I don't use it, although my colleagues at work call me by it. I don't correct anybody; in fact, I often wish they called me by my first name instead.

You forgot Mx.

When I was a sophomore I had a physics prof who would freak out when called Mr instead of Dr, saying "I worked my arse off and earned that title. It's disrespectful not to use it."
