Commute will be around 45 minutes from Mandeville but that also puts you 45 minutes from New Orleans.
I hate traffic but like to live around civilization. If I where you, I would look around downtown Covington. Keeps you (for the most part) out of the 21 & 190 cluster fricks and puts your commute closer to 25 minutes. It also puts Hammond area jobs into play for your wife.

Both are nice. Either way you can't go wrong. Spend as little time in Bogalusa as humanly possible. One of the worst places in this country that wouldn't be considered "inner city". As an added bonus there's a shitton of crappy people there also.

My dad retired from IP a couple of years ago as an EE after 35 years at Vicksburg, Bastrop, then to Mansfield when they closed Bastrop. I live in Madisonville and love it here after growing up in the Monroe Metropolis.
First off, do NOT consider Bogalusa. The prices of homes there are dirt cheap for a reason. Make sure you purchase a home in St. Tammany Parish, no matter what.
Money Hill is a fine place north of Covington that would make for a good commute to Bogalusa. Abita Springs is a quaint place also.
Don't speed through Sun on your commute.

Covington and Mandeville are both nice options for working in Bogalusa. Its a little drive, but most of the way is small town highway driving so not much traffic outside of Covington.
If you have kids, get in a Mandeville school district. If you don't, downtown Covington is pretty nice

Yeah I'm used to the smell of paper mills. I've been at corporate so it'll take some getting used to. At least New Orleans isn't terribly far
What corporate office smells like a paper mill ?

I suggest Bush. There are a few nice subdivisions out there (Grande Hills, Whippoorwill, and Money Hill). Basically, you are 25 minutes from downtown Covington. There are some nice restaurants, bars, and events in Covington. The town has a nice feel to it. You are about 20 minutes from Bogalusa from those subdivisions as well. I live in Covington and love it, but I grew up here and am getting closer to 50. Me personally, I wouldn't want the 45 minute commute. If that doesn't bother you though, Covington would be an excellent choice IMHO. Let me know if you need more info (subdivisions, agents, flood zones, etc.). Congrats and good luck.

The Covington area. Should I live there or mandeville?
find you a place on 21 between the Bog and Covington, as others have poster a few nice new subdivisions hace gone up in the Bush area.
DO NOT move to Bogalusa, it is one of the most depressing cities in the south, unless that is you like to hang with poor trashy dopeheads in a city with shite to do that is miles from anywhere.
Poplarville is better but still not what you are looking for reading your followups, and the wife will not find work there.

Don't inhale, the air there causes cancer, birth defects, and at a minimum complete insanity.

One thing you must experience in life is the Bogalusa Mardi Gras parade.

Poplarville is pretty spartan for someone looking for city life, zero bars, zero theaters, zero shopping other than Fred's or DG, and the best meal in town is sonic.
If he was looking for a quite country setting I would agree that Poplarville fits the bill.
Poplarville is centrally located though, around 45 min to the coast or Hattiesburg and an hour from NO.
His wife is going to have a pretty good daily drive to work in a real hospital though.
