Take a look at north central austin too. There are lots of apartments off of Burnet, north of 45th that may fit your budget. There are lots of bars / restaurants you can walk to, and you are on the rapid bus route that takes you downtown. You could also look into living somewhere on the train route, which gets you to the heart of downtown fast.

you'll be fine on 35 then. i've never got mad at Austin traffic before 6:45. that being said, if i'm not going to clear 45 before 7, i take the toll.

Recent transplant to Austin here.. we wound up South, in the 78745, renting until we figure out where to buy.. it’s a decent area, some parts are a little run down but you can tell that it’s quickly gentrifying and there’s tons of (mostly apartment) construction all around us.. also it’s a quick 10 min Uber ride downtown.. when we buy we will def be looking to stay South, for a lot of reasons- North Austin to me seems more congested, and more dense than south.. the way it was explained to me, North is ‘more concrete’, South is ‘more character’.. the other reasons we’re looking to stay South is that Apple recently announced that they’re brining 15,000 new jobs to N Austin, which means even higher skyrocketing home prices, and even worse traffic- both are which are even hard to imagine being any worse.. So for our needs, South Austin is a little more low-key and a little more reasonable price-wise.

Whoever said live in RR or Pflugerville, do not do that if your office is in west Austin. You need to be looking at areas like Bee Cave or somewhere off of 360 and/or 620.

It's the cool thing to do to trash Austin on this site because it's blowing up and people like to take shots at anything that's growing/improving (probably why so many on this board are content in LA).

It's certainly more laid back compared to Dallas and the cookie cutter suburbs that surround it. I did see that y'all are expanding your budget to $1,750 which is a good idea because $1,500 isn't going far in any part of this city that isn't south Austin.

Which is crazy. 10 years ago $1,500 was more than enough to rent close to the city center.

7 years ago I had a nice little apartment off of 620 near the lake, I was paying $700 per month. I don't know what it's going for now, but I can promise $700 won't come close to touching it.

My house in N Austin last year was $1750 for a 2-story 4br/3.5 bath. Downtown was usually 20 minutes down mopac. Easy access to walnut and brushy with an easy drive to the greenbelt on weekends

What was the commute like going home on Mopac in the afternoons?

I'm in northeast Austin now (Dessau/Parmer) area and we've been paying $1,700 for a 3br/2bath for the last 3 years.

We rented in 78704 for a year but that was a crazy amount.

Now in 78731. Good public schools is what led us there that's reasonably close to downtown.

If you leave downtown at 5pm you're looking at a consistent 30 minutes to the 183/Mopac interchange as a milestone. However, if you're going past that and work relatively close to Cesar Chavez you can get on the toll lane to speed that up.

Things ratchet up and down at a fairly predictable rate.

Unless it rains. If it rains all hell breaks loose.

Only averaging 35 inches of rain a year. Austin is relatively a dry city with way less rain than Houston or most of the gulf coast.

Good decision, people hate on Austin because it has the audacity to lean left of center but I love it here. Better market, I make way more money, better looking women..

I'm in Westlake and I pay ~1200/month but i also live far away from pretty much everything. The Far West neighborhood is pretty cool.

For 1500 you could probably find a good spot in most of the city. Try Hyde Park.

True. Sadly it takes only about a spit amount of rain for the cluster to happen. Thankfully not terribly often.

Mopac is shite going either way. I have about 11 mile commute going South and it takes 30 - 45 minutes most days. I35 is worse. Pretty much any North/South commute in Austin sucks.

As someone who lived in Round Rock and spent much time in Austin, I can assure you, most of us hate on Austin because it is overrun with pretentious, self-important pricks, not because of its Political leanings.

I really enjoy visiting Austin, but I couldn’t live there. I do not fit in with the people. They are way too liberal. I could live in a place like Kyle. Close enough yet far enough away.

So you don't live in the yuppie part of Austin. Westlake is a really nice area.
