DadWafer bought a condo, that I and my two sisters (no pics) lived in while each of us were at LSU. He bought it for us, but bought it for the investment as well.

For those saying 18, you mean you actually did all your own laundry and paid your own bills? I don't think moving out and going to college while mom and pop still pays any bills qualifies as being independent and on your own.
I completely cut the cord at 21.

Got a job and paid for a lot on my own, but it sure is more independent than living at your parents house still. (Not that there's anything wrong with that)

Grats on having a badass old man
I would have happily moved out into something my parents were paying for if I had been given the option. They told me I could stay with them if I went to college, but they weren't paying for shite since they bought me a truck when I was in highschool.

Honestly, the US is pretty unique in the concept that once a child reaches the age of 18 or 22 it's time to move out.
If you're unattached and have a job in the same town as your parents, it makes good financial sense. There may be minor sacrifices in independence, but it's really not as hard as some would have you believe.
Now, if you're living with mom/dad and not contributing anything to the household or planning for your future, and just blowing all your money, that's a different story.

does spending a month or two at home in the summer count as moving out?

My take on it is, if you do MORE than your share of the chores and pay MORE than your share of the expenses, then it is ok to live at home....basically, you need to be an asset to your parents to make it acceptable....
There will always be a loser/freeloader stigma attached though, and that is something that you just have to deal with if you chose to live at home past your early 20's...

17 for college and I didn't want to go back. I'd advise to get your own place.

18.
Worked two jobs to be able to pay my rent and put myself through college.
Paid cash for my tuition each semester and graduated debt free.
Kids these days in debt to their eye balls by the time they are 24 make me laugh.

stay at your mom's house for as long as possible. put all your money in the bank.

I moved out when I was 18 to go off to college. If my parents lived in a bigger city I could have seen myself moving back home for a little while after I graduated to work and save money. Like a year TOPS

17 for college. Parents covered my car insurance and that was it. Split a 2 bedroom apartment with 4 people. Got a job within days of departing the house. It wasn't much, but I made ends meet. I had to stay off the lease for a few months until I turned 18 because I was too young to legally be on it. I can't fathom being in my 20s and living at my parent's house.

I was 14 and the reason was my grandmother (parents were already dead) died. Been on my own ever since.

I moved out at 18 and never spent a single night with my parents again. Seriously. Not one. That's how we rolled back in the Rugged Individualism Days .We had excess testosterone and grapefruit sized balls. Which actually, now that I think of it, may have been why I had that hydro ceil surgery in 94, but I digress...
Now with my kids, in this economy, I expect them to stay with me as long as they want out of necessity and to earn a solid nest egg. Whatever they prefer.
