Let's say a guy in his mid-late 30's who works in the tech industry and pays >$2000 rent for <500ft² wants to move back to the town where he and his wife both went to college and commence reproducing. On a scale of 1 to 10--1 being investing in Apple 20 years ago and 10 being investing in anything 89 years ago--how terrible an idea does the O-T think this is?

Moving to Baton Rouge is a terrible idea. Terrible leadership, awful infrastructure, everything is dying. If you are set on coming back to Louisiana, I would move to Madisonville.

Sounds like a great idea. Just pass up BR and head about 5 hours west down I-10.

You will make 2x the money and be able to enjoy sending your kids to public school.

If you enjoy major traffic, horrible roads, flooding from a small t-storm, lackluster entertainment options, high crime rates, etc.

I certainly understand NY is very expensive.

With Louisiana with no family, just because of going to college there and wanting to start a family? Need to keep in mind, wages will be less in Louisiana than NY. Although taxes lower and will probably need to pay for private school. It depends on what you value for quality of life.

Many from Louisiana have moved to Houston. In burbs of Houston, no state income tax, great schools, wages hire than Louisiana, cheap electric, car insurance is 1/2, house insurance is less, labor is cheaper as well.

Since 1990: Up 3,200%

I'm not sure what investing in anything 89 years ago means.

Probably pretty bad unless you had an inside track to a high paying position here like with IBM.

Costs would be significantly lower than NYC but so would your salaries. And any move to the area would mean either private schools or moving to areas with good public schools on the outskirts of BR like Zachary, Central, Livingston Parish, Ascension Parish, etc.

Happiness may be worth a lot but it can be a hell of an adjustment going from NYC money to BR money.

Homesick and no longer living a lifestyle that justifies the cost of living up here. Until I met xv, every time I left the apartment, it was because I was hunting for strange. Now that I'm a happily-married man, I'm like, "what are we paying all this rent for?" If we want to stay up here and have kids, we have to move a good bit out of the city, and that has us questioning the point of living here in the first place. We can afford a higher quality of life (and compile more substantial savings) back home.

Obviously I'm aware of the benefits of living in Texas, but I don't know if I can put a price tag on the family that we have in Louisiana.

89 years ago was right before the 1929 crash, which wiped out lots of people.
