Let's say a guy in his mid-late 30's who works in the tech industry and pays >$2000 rent for <500ft² wants to move back to the town where he and his wife both went to college and commence reproducing. On a scale of 1 to 10--1 being investing in Apple 20 years ago and 10 being investing in anything 89 years ago--how terrible an idea does the O-T think this is?
Assuming they can get jobs in Baton Rouge.
10.
NYC isn't for everyone, and Baton Rouge metro is extremely family oriented if nothing else. If that's what is important to you in this stage in life, you need to do it.
NOTHING is more important than family.

So many better places than BR to do this.
If his family and friends are in BR, there really isn't a better place to do it.

You would be better off throwing a dart at a map and moving there; even if it is a map of Mississippi.

So, terrible idea?

Yeah, I should have constructed my meter differently.

Don't you have a sweet gig up there working for MLB?

I guess 1 then. I would say move closer to family if that's important.
And it's my position that nothing is more important.

I know many here love enjoying paying private school tuition, but can really live a better quality of life in Houston especially with kids. Lots of negativity about the high property taxes (they are less than NY) but many fail to realize there is no state income tax. Then you factor in amazing public schools, car insurance is 1/2, can definately get more bang for your buck housing wise in the Houston suburbs, house insurance is cheaper, cheap electric.
With car insurance and electric alone we save around $400/month.

I also happen to have a AirBnB residence that I'd cut you a month to month deal on

I don't see the attraction to Texas.

I'd personally rather live in BR than NY. Assuming you will be moving to burbs or nicer neighborhood. Be prepared for a drop off in public insfrastructure and services, but I'm guessing you already know that.

Move to Tampa area. Better Tech sector jobs, short flight to NOLA if you catch an urge to visit BR

I grew up on Long Island and moved South when I was 16.
I have ZERO plans on ever moving back up North. The South, especially Louisiana suit me so much better than NY did.

I absolutely agree with this. Most posters here like to hate on Baton Rouge and Louisiana, but truth be said, there is good and bad no matter where you live. It just depends on your preference.

It seems like coming from NYC that Nola or Metairie (for raising a family) would be your pace.
You’re going to be miserable in BR—traffic, dumb people, not much to do on weekends entertainment wise, mediocre food (although I like what Government st. Is doing). Ect. I could never move back.

Suck it up. We have two kids in the city and trying for a third.

Louisiana has cheap land so move to the country and commute into a city in Louisiana that isn’t Baton Rouge

Has she decided who the father's going to be yet or is she just gonna leave it up to chance?

Metarie and NOLA are full of incredibly stupid people.

Pending in which neighborhood you live in you can separate from dumb people. I would imagine coming from NYC he dosnt want to live in a dsld neighborhood next to a bunch of blue collar types. But who knows.
