paying position here like with IBM

IBM in BR doesn't pay high end. They may have a few senior level positions but there average for the 500 or so jobs is 46K per year.

I absolutely agree with this. Most posters here like to hate on Baton Rouge and Louisiana, but truth be said, there is good and bad no matter where you live. It just depends on your preference.

This X1000. There is plenty in Baton Rouge to keep you entertained as a married couple. Its not like you are going to the bar 4-5 nights a week.

Private school is expensive but my kids would probably go to Catholic school no matter where I lived.

And once you have kids and they get a little older you stay busy with their stuff anyway and have even less free time

One of my BILs is in Seattle. Left immediately after school to work at Microsoft. Now that he’s starting to think about family, this is his dilemma. In his situation, I’d bolt. Frick Seattle. In yours, man, I’d stay....it’s fricking NYC.

I think it’s a good idea to move out of New York City unless you’re absolutely killing it. But that said you can find a lot of the things you’re looking for - reasonable housing - in cities other than Baton Rouge.
Outside of the city being the place where you fell in love as teens what else is the draw?

Family and “family.” A lot of people are crapping on Baton Rouge in this thread, and I’m familiar with their reasons, but the truth is that the people I love the most are there and can’t be replaced.

Aside: she and I actually met up here. We never went to LSU at the same time. She’s a bit younger. :)

Where in Baton Rouge is it $20k for a year of private school for one child?

ETA: Episcopal High. Wow, I didn't realize it was that expensive.

Hard to argue with that logic. That's as good of a reason as any to relocate.

I moved several years ago and didn’t change my location ($2000 for ~900ft ² with roommates). I’m a couple miles north of there now.

If he's intent on having kids in Louisiana, don't do it in Baton Rouge unless his job is there and there alone.

I would recommend having kids in Ascension Parish, Lafayette, or Mandeville/Covington area instead.

If everybody keeps running away from their problems, there will soon be nowhere left to run away to. Cajuns left France, they left Canada, and now Louisiana isn’t good enough for them either. It must get a little tiring. Once you leave your home, you are just that, a man with no home
