re: Mounting TV above the fireplace

I would rather block a window before I would mount the TV over the fireplace.
Also consider a wall mount, if necessary. I have used an articulating wall mount and have the TV mounted in a corner near the fireplace.

If you decide to mount it yourself, just know that yes, everyone does notice the cables running along the top/down the side of the mantle. Either learn how to move an outlet and fish cables, hire a pro, or get a TV stand.

That was the only place to put ours. Fortunately it's a pretty big living room and we just put a massive TV up there, it really hasn't been an issue.

first world problems i guess.

Historically, the fireplace was the focal point of the living room. Mounting the TV above the mantle, allows the room design/layout to maintain the fireplace as the focal point, but with the modern advantage of also having the TV the focal point.
Split and open floor plans somewhat necessitate having the TV above the fireplace, or no TV at all. If your room is large enough, the upward viewing angle is not that bad. Having it offset to one side in a built in really skews the symmetry of the room and widens the focal point.

Lie down when you watch. Then it's perfect. Also, if you have an open floorplan, it's much better for watching from the kitchen or having sports on when you are entertaining and people are milling around. High is way better than low.

It does work for that. However, it's not for traditional seated watching.

TIL I, and every other family member I have are all trash. I have a large brick fireplace, which I promptly mounted my tv on as soon as I bought the house...
I love it, and couldn't imagine sticking my TV in the corner of the room, or on a tv stand in front of the windows that showcase the backyard.
Even if I didn't prefer it, it would be a really awkward setup if it wasn't mounted above the fireplace. I do have a high-backed, very comfortable couch, which is also about 20ft or so from the screen. The angle to watch isn't bad at all. I love that I can sit on the couch and watch TV without having people walking through the line of sight to get across the room.

You shouldn't be mounting your TV anywhere...pervert.

I hate it too. It's one thing I looked out for when house shopping. Big negative if living room was designed for TV to go above fireplace.
We don't really watch a lot of TV compared to most families though

Besides the angle issue, a 20 foot viewing distance is HUGE. You're talking probably 120" set or more for a "serious" viewing experience. Bottom line is living rooms aren't made for serious viewing, never were, and the TV over the fireplace trend is an acknowledgement of that.

Everyone is wanting an open floor plan. One of the reasons this homeowner wanted a larger living area is so they could set their couch far enough back to not have to bend their heads to watch tv.

The inside brick is another fad I don't care for

He's gonna need a bigger (wider) fireplace.

From the looks of your picture, if the homeowners place the couch above the round outlets in the floor as designed, they most certainly will have to bend their heads to watch TV. That's the problem I have. You can push the couches back further, and put a rug over that spot, but it basically negates the design of the room, which is a couch over the floor outlets.

I lowered my mantle and the TV is at the perfect height now. There is no other place to put a TV in my living room unless I put a TV stand in front of the fireplace.

My last two houses I built had it mounted on the wall. Placed cable and electric receptacles above the fireplace though for the next owner who will inevitably want to mount their tv there.

they most certainly will have to bend their heads to watch TV.
