Scruffy ran into someone he went to high school with at the Flying Pig Hostel in Amsterdam. Completely unexpected.
Scruffy walks in to check in and does a double take when he sees him chilling in the smoking room. Good times.

On three different occasions while serving in the military in Iraq. A high school classmate, a guy I worked with at service merchandise, and a distant cousin. All three encounters were totally random, because I didn't know any of them had joined the military.
When I ran into my cousin it was needed because I was going through a rough patch. Walking around a corner one day at camp anaconda in Iraq. I literally bumped right into him. Ended up being one of the best days of my life.

How often does Scruffy run into the first person narrative version of himself?

Walking through Moscow airport I saw a guy I met at a thib Mardi grass parade five years before, said hello and went our seperate ways.
24 hours later and 30 countries away I bump into the same dude walking out of a sketchy grocery store in a thirdworld shite hole.

My unit was doing a 'relief in place' in Iraq. Middle of the black-as-hell night, I'm checking the lines of my unit and the unit we are replacing. I'm moving into one area and can't see squat. I get the challenge password, and I answer with the counter-password. Then I hear, "David? What the hell are you doing out here?" The young Marine was someone I had coached on the West Baton Rouge Junior Deputy Rifle Team about 10 years prior. I never knew he had joined up.

I was working at Foot Locker in a mall in Skokie, IL when I helped a guy that looked very familiar with some shoes. He asked me where I was from/went to high school. Told him BR/CHS turns out he was a teacher there while I was there. Never had him as a teacher though.
Also ran into a guy I played football with in HS in the Atlanta airport.

Going through Customs at Schipol, Amsterdam ran into an Indian guy I used to go to school with.
Capital City Brew Pub, Washington DC ran into a guy from England that I used to go to school with.
Reeperbahn, Hamburg ran into a guy that used to know my dad pretty well...we were both sheepish about meeting one another there.

I've had 2 events of note:
Summer 09 I was studying abroad and was in Prague out late one night with a couple good buds from the program. Out of nowhere we see one of our best buds in the cab queue who was studying abroad in Germany that summer. Had no idea he was visiting Prague that weekend.
2 I was on a road trip with my family in New England and we stopped at a tobacco shop in Connecticut near the ma border. Our uncles brother strolls up in the middle of a 30 mile bike trip from his hometown in ma and buys a couple stogies. Parents hadn't seen him since their wedding (dad's sister's husband's brother). 1000 miles from home
