most people seem to tell their grandkids what to call them instead of letting the grandkids choose
I've noticed this as well. Weird af IMO, but whatever. I choose to file this in my "shite to not waste brain cells on" file.

We used Mawmaw, Pawpaw for our grandparents. My wife's family uses Grandma or Gigi and Pappap...now when my kids started having kids, my daughter asked me "what are the kids gonna call you Dad?" So, I asked her , who's the leader of our tribe and she said "you are"....and Chief was born. Grandkids call me Chief or Big Chief and the misses is Gigi.

My grandmother and her sister didn’t want cute names or traditional names. We always called them Susie & Madge. Now my dad has followed in their footsteps, and he’s just Randy. My Mom is Nana

You think gramps tell her “Bear wants some honey” when he dicks her down?

Mere and Gang-gang. It was an attempt at Grand-Mere and Grand-pere but the 1st grandchild (my older cousin) could only say Mere and Gang-gang when she started talking and it stayed that way for all of us.

Now? Pawpaw and mawmaw/ma’ammaw. The most recent generation of grandparents’ egos refusing to allow people to call them a name universally recognized for grandparents is comical.

My MIL wanted to be called Geaux-Ma.
Everyone immediately shot that down.

My family only sounds strange because the names aren't American English.
In Denmark you dad is far and your mother is mor. Your mother's mom is mormor. Your mother's dad is morfar. Your dad's mom is farmor. Your dad's father is farfar. If you have a step something you use best in the name like bestmor or bestfar. In most cases the r is dropped at the end of far for grandfathers leaving morfa and farfa.

The grandparents wanted to be called Grand-mere and Grand-pere. The oldest grandchildren pronounced that as Grossy and Grumpy, and that stuck.

I had a childhood friend whose grandparents were called “Moose” and “Poose” - no idea why, but always thought that was hilarious. Another friend’s Hispanic grandmother lived with their family - they called her “Gon-Guh”. Whenever I visited there I could never call her that without laughing - it always reminded me of someone who should be swinging on a vine in a Tarzan movie
My own grandparents names were pretty boring:, mom’s parents were just “grandma” and “grandpa”. But my other grandmother was called “Big Mama”… by her own choice . My mother could never bring herself to call her that however as she thought it was disrespectful to call her mother-in-law “big” (probably because that grandmother literally WAS big) so she always just called her “Mama (last name)” instead.

Have friends who call their grandfather Baggie. And grandmother Weedie. Have no idea where that came from. My son’s kids call me pawpaw. My daughter’s kids call me Aho. When my wife was alive she was Nini
