I bought a used Dodge pickup with 70k miles on it from the school board equipment auction in college for $2500. Most expensive was my current used F150 for $30k. I guess I'll drive it till the wheels fall off because I ain't paying that bullshite monopoly money for anything these days.

Since 22, I've bought 6 new vehicles. Never bought a used one. Always had them serviced at the dealerships. Never had any major issues.

Always had a car note though. So one problem solved created another.

I usually look for a 2-3 year old car with around 30-40 thousand miles. That seems to be the sweet spot as far saving some money but still getting 100,000 miles with little service needed.

Same. I'll put a new engine in mine if necessary before I pay current prices.

1994 Mazda B2200 extended cab. $500 dollars cash and never had insurance on it. Drove it for 8 months like that.

2022 Cherokee Summit. $72K for the wife. Nicest vehicle I've ever been in.

My father in law has the record for cheapest. He lived in Pickens county Alabama but worked for BNSF and traveled anywhere from West Memphis AR to Pensacola FL. He worked four 10's so he would get a hotel room but there was still a lot of driving to get to wherever they told him to go.
Iin 1991 he bought a ugly arse 1985 yellow 2wd Isuzu pickup for $400. It had about 160,000 miles on it when he bought it.

He drove it until he retired in 2006 and it had over 625,000 miles on it. I think it was diesel and got around 40 miles per gallon.

He never had to go into the motor or transmission. All original. He had kept his paperwork and I think he had put like 11 sets of tires on it.

It is still in his barn and was running a couple years ago when I saw it last.

Back in the day (early 90's), I bought a '77 Cutlass Supreme with an Olds 350 in it, from one of my dad's coworkers for $200. He even threw a new tire in the trunk.

It was a "plant car", was rusted as hell where the vinyl roof trim was, so we stripped that stuff off, sanded and filled with bondo, and sprayed gray primer on it. One of the cylinders wasn't firing, so we pulled the valve cover, and saw the lifters and rods were fouled heavily with grunge. Pulled some of the larger chunks out by hand, dumped some Marvel Mystery Oil directly into that area and put the thing back together, ran the engine and everything broke free and ran. We changed the oil twice with Mobil One, and never had a problem again.

Car was the epitome of a "hulk"... all the interior trim was dry-rotted, so we just pulled it out and, like the roof, primed it so it would be covered. Once we stripped it to nearly bare frame and engine, it ran like a dream, was clean (and the AC worked!).

I ended up painting the whole thing with about 8 cans of primer, and just drove it like that for a couple years.
I wish I still had it. It was a fun, no-nonsense beast. And that Olds 350 was the shite, I took a few Camaros that wanted to play at redlights and straightaways.

It started life looking a lot like this

within a week it looked a lot like this, but without any pinstripes, and completely matte (due to the primer being flat).

We never did paint it, and sold it to somebody who, I believe, painted it gold metalflake.

Cheapest was a 2005 Nissan Titan I paid 6k for. 4x4 with 100k+ on it. Was a pretty good truck.

Most expensive is my 2023 Tundra for 75k.

Typing this out really makes you think about just how ridiculous the prices of trucks are now

$300 for a 17 year old Volkswagen Bug that had been painted metallic purple and had a plastic snakeskin interior, no gas gauge, but a working heater, and it was cold that winter.
