Most small Black Belt towns are wastelands. Probably the worst one is Uniontown. Special shout out to Union Springs.

Greenville
For as prosperous as what it once was, this would get my vote. Still got some damn good tamales though.

Pick any town in the Mississippi delta. It’s the land of the haves and have nots and with the land being completely flat it’s all out in the open. Depressing as hell.
Pretty much this. Take your pick of greenwood, Greenville clarksdale etc
I’ll add gordo Alabama to the mix.

Ville Platte and it’s not close.

In your travels, or maybe your hometown, what is the most depressing small town you’ve seen? Where it’s pretty much dead, nothing is happening, and it’s becoming more run down every year?
Once you leave Flagstaff and start traveling north towards the monument valley area, there are miles of Native American settlements filled with small trailers with tires on the roofs and abandoned cars. There is no industry, few stores and abject poverty in a remote, dusty, wasteland. Its depressing simply to drive through. Can’t imagine having to live there.

Brownwood Tx. Everything fricking brown.
unless you're being funny, Brownwood is a very green pretty town in the hill country.
Bronwsville on the other hand...
My answers for Texas are Van Horn, Rio Grande City, Marlin, or Leuders.

Youngstown, OH. Gray as far as my eyes could see.

i did some work with Flagstaff USD a few years back and had to go out to the reservation. The Eastern path towards Winona was actually gorgeous in my opinion. But agree the trek north was depressing.

A lot of people would say my hometown of Lake Village, AR, but I love it. I live on the lake, I can have my bass boat in the water in 5 minutes, I can catch a mess of crappie of my dock, in 10 minutes I’m hunting 160” whitetail and there’s some pretty good turkey hunting all around me. Plus easy access to some world class Mississippi lakes. I know it doesn’t sound good to some, but to me it’s heaven.

My vote is my hometown, Opelousas, LA. Most of you from Louisiana know about the plight of Opelousas. They’re building a few restaurants near I-49, but that’s about the only good news I’ve heard in years.
I would like to add Port Barre, LA and Ville Platte, LA.
You've obviously never been to Ferriday. Makes all those places look luxurious.

Just spent 3 days in Philadelphia, definitely most depressing big town I’ve been to in a long time.

Zachary, LA. Ain't shite to do or eat here, unless you want to wait over an hour for a table or go to a fast food joint with folks that have bigger "IDGAF" attitudes than you'll find at the same place in Baton Rouge. If you ever decide to move here, make sure you have everything you need before coming home at night. Oh yeah, and the schools will be mostly minority in the very near future, so there's that. If you want to see a prime example of what a "victim of its own success" looks like, look no further.

Any reservation town. Crow Agency, for example.
