Crane flies, or what some seem to call mosquito hawks, do not eat mosquitoes. Many species don't feed at all, and some don't even have mouth parts because they don't live long enough as adults to need to eat. They emerge, mate as quickly as possible, lay their eggs, and spend the rest of their few days waiting around to die. The ones that do feed usually feed on nectar. The larvae of some species do feed on some other living insects, but not mosquitoes, and mostly decaying plant matter.

The crane flies and mayflies feed all sorts of critters when they swarm. I've even seen squirrels grabbing dying mayflies from the ground before.

If they were any bigger the Cajun’s would eat them.

Updated explanation: Sections of East Baton Rouge Parish are experiencing very large populations of the Northern floodwater mosquito right now due to the severe drought last year this species eggs did not have an opportunity to hatch. With recent rains, we now have seen a very large population emerge particularly in the southern and Eastern parts of the parish. This species prefers cooler weather (frick me) and can fly more than a mile at each night.

Where did you get that update?

Speaking of mayflies...
I've seen mayflies throughout the winter here...either I've never noticed until now, or they're confused
what I'm seeing in large numbers now is crane flies

Not much here. Just a couple moths, and the first bug that seems to poke its head out every year:
A white margined burrower bug. I saw them a lot last year, and they are put in numbers crawling in the day lilies that have poked their heads up. Just a cell phone pic.

There were some big arse skeeters out this evening in Prairieville. I’m not talking about crane flies/mosquito hawks either (plenty of those, too)…. Just a ton of fat arse skeeters!

No it's mosquitos.
Yeah I find the “it’s mosquito hawks” comments a little funny.. I (and I assume most people posting in this thread) have been living here long enough to know the difference, and there are definitely a heaping shitload of mosquitos right now in addition to the mosquito hawks.

I bought a new fogger today. The shear number of insects is crazy. It’s like the ground rises as you walk thru. Hit my yard and neighbors this am; going to hit them again at dawn:

Dragon flies are the true mosquito hawks, which sadly, I never see enough of them.
What happened to these? They used to be prolific in the 80s-90s

I find mosquito “swarms” to be more prolific in the fall/spring rather than the summer. They’re consistent in the summer, but the most mosquitoes I’ve ever seen in my life are usually at dusk/dawn while fishing in cooler months.

You don't see them as much in towns or neighborhoods due to the prolific fogging and spraying, which is unfortunate because they eat a ton of mosquitoes in all of their life stages and all of the mosquito's life stages.

Am I the only one who goes inside the house like this so the mosquitoes don’t get in that be hovering over the door?

Have they grown to human size?
This would make a good low budget c movie.

I find it odd that so many posters don't know the difference from mosquitos, mosquito hawks, dragon flies, and daddy longlegs. What's wrong with you people?
