I'm seeing a ton of both mosquitos and crane flies.
Definitely a different type of mosquito than we normally see in south Louisiana. They're everywhere as someone mentioned, on porches, siding, bushes, etc, but don't seem as aggressive? Doesn't seem like I've been bitten like normal mosquitos, but I haven't been outside a whole lot.
This. They are hanging out together. Really bad under my covered patio in one corner particularly. Saw the same thing on my mom's front porch yesterday. Very odd for this time of year.

Haven't noticed anything out of the ordinary over this way. A shite ton of mosquito hawks though.

I think it's incompetence.
In the fall, they didn't really do routine spraying. They would come out and spray your yard for you if you called, but they need to be spraying regularly.

Everyone is likely talking about the large crane flies, which are:
1) harmless and
2) not mosquitos.
Do they eat mosquitos?

No.

I’ve noticed a major uptick in both mosquitoes and mosquito hawks/crane flies. The mosquitos are definitely different than normal… I’ve got crane flys all over the damn house, I vacuum up a dozen off the floor every other day.

DOTD is on it. Mosquitos should migrate to their designated zones.

I was sitting outside reading last night and it was 47 degrees and mosquitos were everywhere!

I’ve got tens of thousands it seems like just in my small neighborhood yard. Nevwr seen it like this.
Multiple species. They aren’t biting yet, I assume because of the cold, but I shudder to think about next week.

Most mosquitoes only swarm to mate. Once a female (the one that bites) successfully mates it shuts it down. The females aren't whores, she chooses one suitable male and that's it. Once mated, and conditions are right for egg laying (a source of water, even a thimble full will do) the female starts looking for a blood meal. The blood meal is crucial, as the eggs won't develop without it. Once she has a blood meal or two the egg development process is done and she lays her eggs in a suitable place. A day or two later she dies.
This process takes place over a matter of days in proper conditions. If conditions are poor (a drought) they will still swarm to mate at times, but the female will store the sperm until a more conducive environment develops or is found. Like I said, though, it doesn't take much water, even a bell-shaped bloom on a flower or a small puddle from a leaking sprinkler head will do.

They aren’t swarming. Just hanging out on my house and in the grass. As I said I’ve never seen anything like it.
It’s about 50/50 male/female, but haven’t been bitten once yet.

I don't think there are actually many regular biting mosquitos flying around at all.
Wrong.. At both my house and my parents house, I've seen hundreds of mosquitos in the carport- With crane flies mixed in but far less in numbers. Same at the dog park.
I believe it's mosquitos everyone is seeing. I wouldn't discredit the knowledge of the average person from Louisiana on being able to distinguish between the 2- I'd be willing to bet that most people from this state know the difference

It’s a mixture. I’ve got literally thousands hovering in my yard and around my patio. The majority are crane flies, but there’s a portion of ‘regular’ mosquitoes mixed in with them.

awful at my house in denham in the evening... theyve mutated to withstand the colder temps it seems

Then they deserved to be bitten

The crane flies are all over my yard right now. Even my kids are asking about this. Thanks for the info.

From the sound of it, there aren't many people being bitten by these "mosquito swarms" or....mosquito hangouts.
Posted on 2/20/24 at 5:40 pm to LegendInMyMind
I just spent almost 2 hours in the yard and wasn't bit once. It looked like I was just walking through a bug cloud the entire time
