I've been considering paying a local company in BR to spray the yard for mosquitos (Mosquito Joe or Swat) but I wanted to see if the chemical they used was available somewhere online or maybe at Precision Chemicals.

Does anyone have any experience doing it themselves?

They probably use a formulation of bifenthrin mixed with some sort of citrus smelling additive. Some places use Malathion but it smells pretty awful.

It's my experience that when you pay people to get rid of mosquitos you will be disappointed.

The fact of the matter is that if your guy isn't spraying daily (at least) there is no way he will keep up with the life cycle of the bastards.....just my experience. The only times I've ever been satisfied with mosquito control is when I lived in Rayne and they sprayed every single morning and every single night including weekends. That summer I hardly ever had any on my patio.

Right now I'm in Crowley and they spray every night and it's OK but you still have to get in the closed in patio by dark.

Take a look at Talstar (bifenthrin). You can buy the concentrate on Amazon for a reasonable price.

Lots of folks say this is what the exterminator companies use. Not sure if that is correct, but it is popular with bug haters.

Talstar will kill just about any bug it lands on. People think that mosquitos only congregate in places that hold water, but this isn't the case. They will spend their days anywhere they can get a break from the heat. This includes all plants, under the siding of your home, wreaths your wife puts on the front door, under benches, etc. Spraying these areas with Talstar every couple of weeks is your best option to get rid of those frickers.

Spraying Malathion is much cheaper option and works 100%. Follow the direction; spray at the base of everything in the yard such as house, trees, etc. and you won't see many mosquitoes for couple months.

I live in Livingston Parish and my home backs up to a large wooded area. I spray Spectracide on my backyard about once a week and I haven't been bitten by a mosquito since. Not saying it would work for everyone but it seems to be doing the trick.

I would look at Bifen IT. This is the generic of Talstar. Spray everywhere not just places you think have mosquito's. Talstar or a similar version is what most Bug companies use, I asked the bug guy (Orkin) that sprays at work.

we use mosquito joe. the 4-6 days after he comes you can see the results. after that you're wondering how much longer until he comes again.

if you can find the right mix and do it yourself more frequently, you'll be better off than paying for it monthly.

like someone said, they hide EVERYWHERE during the day, not just sitting water areas. Hitting them more often than what joe comes out would be best.

The key is to do this and also get an Insect Growth Regulator (IGR) such as Archer. This affects the lifecycle + mosquito's future ability to procreate

If you have standing water, adding mosquito dunks has always been a solid idea

I spray a perimeter of my yard regularly (~ 1x/month) then full spray of my yard ever 3-4 month

It worked for me. They basically sprayed my bushes, which denied the blood suckers a place to chill. Works better if your neighbors do it as well.

Mosquitos are not very strong flyers. As a result, they often end up wherever the wind takes them. Mosquitos biting you in you yard may have very likely been swept in that direction from your neighbor's yard. Encourage your neighbor to spray as well. One of my neighbors seldom goes outside so he don't even bother. I hit up some of his potted plants with Talstar since I know they harbor mosquitos by the hundreds.

Orkin does my yard and it works well for a couple of weeks. I'm pretty sure they spray Talastar. I may buy some off amazon and start spraying myself.

We used to get eat up if we sat outside in the evening. We rarely get bitten even once for a couple weeks after they come spray.

Go to mosquitobarrier.com. It is nothing but garlic concentrate and harms nothing. I have used it for three years and it works better than anything I have tried. It eliminates ticks etc. A gallon has lasted me three years.
