What the hell did they think was going to happen when you pour gasoline on someone's pants and put a lighter to it? In their minds, how else did they see that going?

Only thing I can imagine is that they thought the flame would be more controlled and he could do some type of trick with his pants on fire. When the flames hit his chest, he was in trouble.
