It definitely makes a huge difference working in a good school. I know from personal experience.

It’s sad how the majority of schools out there suck.

I was in a 10 year relationship with a high school French teacher. She was home at 3:30 and only did work off hours when grades were due, which was very rare. Between summer break(mid Mau - mid-Aug), spring break week, Xmas break, Thanksgiving week and Mardi Gras she only worked about 8 months of the year. She made $45,000/year, which would be equivalent to $67,500 if she worked a full year. From what I witnessed teachers are not overworked at all.

okay. i've been patient. and kept my mouth shut for pages. i believe your story. 100%. I have no doubt it's probably word for word accurate. My problem with it is, not all teachers can and should be lumped into the same category as your ex. Just like you and I aren't racist, homophobic, Islamophobic, transphobic, etc, etc just because one white person one time on the internet is.

And it's frustrating being lumped into the same category as an outlier, isn't it?

My wife has been a teacher for 5 years.

On a regular basis.... She might, might, be home before 8-9PM and that's 2 nights a week. But during football season or the fall: she's at ballganes, events, whatever 5 out of 7 nights a week. She works her arse off. Still makes time for the gym. Still cooks and cleans her arse off, to keep me happy. And we have 2 young dogs of which she grooms, walks, and cares for.

I work around 45-50 hours a week at a deskjob. I CANNOT for the life of me imagine working as hard as my wife does at her school teacher job for $55k. So yeah! fricking right she deserves a week off for Thanksgiving, 2 for Christmas, and 3 months off in the Summer. And a 1-2% pay raise every 5-10 years.

I'm not saying all teachers are like her. But guess what there are some out there who bust their fricking asses to educate a bunch useless unappreciative shitheads spawned from excuses for parents. You better pray every night on your knees, that BayouCatFan Jr has a handful of teacher's like Mrs Kent.

So you are saying she is willingly turning down less hours and more money to continue to volunteer to do shite for free? That's fine and good for her, and I'm glad she draws fulfillment from her job, but she can't have her cake and eat it to. Don't bitch about pay and hours and then turn down more pay and hours. It's pretty fricking simple.

If I've learned anything it's the teachers are on their knees for the students

when and where did i say she bitched about her pay? again, you make ignorant assumptions. she has a business degree from a great university, she could get any job she likes. She wants to teach

back to that whole ignorant assumptions thing again. you assume i got a little dick like you, i don't.

Sorry man. I just can’t believe this or there’s something else going on with her.

She’s working from 7:30ish until 9pm on just school stuff? Then it gets worse during football season?

If she’s a coach or sponsor then I get the long hours and as I said earlier, it’s bullshite. But there simply isn’t that much to do as a teacher unless she’s incompetent at her job.

I hate to go that far but Jesus Christ. 14 hour days just to teach?

I would maybe put in one or two 14 hours days to grade essays if I crammed all the grading into two days. Instead I tell my students they’ll get them back in two weeks and I do a little at a time.

Nah man. You worded that confusingly. She works two nights a week until 9? Or on a regular basis she might get home before 9pm, and that’s two nights a week?

Even two nights a week is absurd.

Edit - I see you mentioned she does cheer. I missed it because you wrote a fricking novel on an OT thread.

Then she must’ve been in a middle of the road school or didn’t give two shits about her job.

I went from working in a PLA (persistently low achieving school) where teachers worked tons of extra hours doing ESS to get students on grade level and volunteered for summer programs for the same purpose. I now work at one of then better schools in the state and those teachers work a ton of extra hours to get kids ready for AP exams and ACT/SAT. Our French teacher is usually there until 5-6 pm (school gets out at 2:20 pm) prepping kids for the National French Exam.

Why should we pay individuals whom the only skillset is dictation, the same wage as someone who builds networks, power systems, and/or medical? I know I will get downvoted to smithereens but when anyone with a brain can do your job, why should you expect specialist pay?

Good lord man. I know you asked a bunch of questions there but your whole outlook is just wrong.

Try teaching a class of 20-40 kids who have no prior knowledge of what you’re trying to explain. You have to teach in different ways because everyone learns differently. Then most people don’t learn or understand on the first go around. So you have to continue teaching one thing to some while allowing those who understand already to get ahead or at least not get bored.

And that excludes motivation and behavioral issues in the classroom.

Unless you are teaching from birth or a child that started kindergarten from living in the woods this isn't true.

I see that several first page posters in here are idiots.

First, you copy and paste all of this article to crap on a 60 year old teacher’s poor math skills. Yes, he’s full of crap. That’s 1 teacher, at 1 school, in 1 district, in 1 city, etc.

Secondly, it’s a myth that teachers ONLY work 9 months of the year. Most teachers work that yes, but coaches, band teachers, cheer coaches, etc begin work down here over a month before the start of school.

You say, “but but...they get stipends!”

When you do put the math to it, the stipends come out to crumbs. Anybody in fine arts (at least in Texas HS’s) gives up many full Saturdays a year to judge competitions, attend mandatory camps, etc.

I once coached middle school basketball and my stipend money came out to $1.65 an hour. It is what it is, and I didn’t do it for the money, that’s for damn sure.

People on here love to bitch about teachers, then they follow it up by bitching about the poor education system. It’s simple, pay them more, and you’ll have good teachers stay in that profession instead of opening the door to 23 year old college graduates teaching 18 year old kids.

And lastly, I didn’t read all of your post, because you are certainly no expert when it comes to the teaching field.
