We got more wind from the gradients than anything to do with a storm. Couple loud claps of thunder and that was it

I know it's tricky and not easy but this is the kind of event (or lack there of) that fuels those who claim weather folks cry wolf all the time

well in fairness - the forecast was the potential for some bad shite that just didn't come together

It was fairly clear yesterday that there wasn't much of a tornado threat today BUT the winds were a big question mark and winds are arguably worse over a large area

Plus it was coming through right at drop off time so I get it but it just sucks. Its great that nothing bad happened but just adds fuel to the bitching fire

Lol.
They closed schools for this??

Eta: there hasn't even been a thunderstorm watch issued by the NWS.
Only a high wind warning.

It doesn't help that people cream their pants over weather threads. What you are complaining about is another indicator of how soft we have become as a society.

There will ALWAYS be weather “events”. The issue is common sense is so rare; it's a superpower these days, along with the 24-hour news cycle ratings system.

This leads to two outcomes:

1. People end up acting stupidly because they are stupid
2. Daddy Government, driven by tort law and liability, legislates common sense.

We really need something better from our meteorologists than what we get. Notify days in advance a major storm system is coming. Assign vague terms of severity to giant swaths of the country. Every weatherman on TV gives their swath the worst case scenario because they don't want to be blamed. It's enough to give the public general anxiety disorder over the weather but not enough to accurately predict where the worst events will be.

Birmingham OTM schools love shutting down for absolutely nothing. A stiff dew will cause them to delay openings. It’s gotten pretty insane.

Snowpocalypse put the fear of God into them. Those few days were like a scene from the walking dead.

Looks like sleet and ice around Birmingham Monday morning and Tuesday and it doesn't get above freezing until Wednesday. Vestavia is going to be fun.

I gotta make chili.

Ultimately the forecasting knowledge/tech available is only so good. They are doing the best they can as far as this goes. As the event gets closer and closer the area gets smaller and smaller. That's why the updates are helpful within a hour or two of the event and they circle relatively small areas. Hopefully that ceiling will be raised in the future

This is a whole different issue that occurs for multiple reasons. Some is them covering their asses but sadly I think most of it is to drive ratings/views/clicks. A lot of it isn't even within the Tv Mets power as it's a directive from above or from the dreaded "outside consultants" who recommend it. To be clear there are some tv Mets like Spann who work painstakingly to be measured when it comes to this stuff but they are few and far between and most of them don't have the power Spann does to tell the higher ups he isn't gonna bullshite anyone

Why? Is there any ice in the forecast? Just going to be very cold, no?

You still confident on that lack of ice down as far as I10 on monday night?

Yeah. Any ice in south LA won't be from active precip like north la and cenla. Any residual ice would be from lingering water on the roads from the rain earlier in the day/night. That will come down to how fast the roads can dry.

I can see them canceling schools on Tuesday because:

1. Monday is a holiday and Tuesday makes the weekend extra long

2. There could be a little bit of ice in some places, particularly rural places where they'd be afraid of sending buses out.

Koozies and zip ties work well as faucet covers.

freezemiser faucet attachments - leave the water on and the freezemiser automatically drips the faucet, when it gets colder the drip increases.
