An old coworker is a single mom. She adopted an underprivileged boy as an infant. Kid is now 8 and is on a playground track team in Jefferson Parish.
A few weekends ago at the weekly track meet, kids coach gives him a 1st place ribbon for the relay race. Only problem is the kid didn't run in the relay race. Wasnt even an alternate. Mom asked the coach what the ribbon was for and coach said that he's part of the team. Mom instructed son to give the ribbon back as he had not earned it.
Apparently kid was a little upset and coach thinks mom is nuts.
I agree with mom in theory, but it's a lot harder when you're taking away something from an 8 yr old.

This old coworker has caused quite the controversy on my FB page with about 50/50 people agreeing with her. The other 50% thinks she's a horrible mother

Eh, if his team won they won. The Super Bowl winning team gives rings to their practice squad peeps.

Ehh, a lot depends on how the team concept is communicated in track. If the track team does well should all members of the team be recognized for their contributions? Or is it basically an individual sport were lots of individuals wear the same colors?

Basically, should walk ons who never play for the football team get all the stuff that teams get at the end of the year (trophies, rings, etc)?

if he in on the team and practices with the team and the team won then he deserves the ribbon.

It was not a participation ribbon it was 1st place.

It's a track team. He didn't participate in the event. During the Olympics, does every team USA athlete get a gold medal when Flojo wins her event?

At least we know that the mom won't be voting for sanders.

This is different from receiving a ribbon for finishing 2nd place or more.

If he contributed in any way to the team.. Even if just in practice and prep then he does in fact deserve a ribbon. Just as a championship team gives a ring to players who never even played.

Just my opinion though. So I think she has the right intentions, but this is different.

Bemoaning "every kid gets a trophy" is a great way to verbally attack entitlement, but I just don't think eliminating it has much practical impact.

We all got trophies every season for rec leagues until we reached the age where school ball started. Championship or not. They sucked unless we actually accomplished something, in which case they were more impressive. Guess which trophies none of us ever proudly displayed? The shitty ones.

We turned out fine, for the most part. We didn't think we could play well when we couldn't. I don't recall ever feeling I was a "owed" a trophy, it was just a marker of finishing another year. I don't think stripping me of the shitty little trophy would have increased my competitive drive or made me more responsible.

Anyway, attacking the concept is a good metaphor for life generally, but I don't think it has much actual value in youth sports. Mom a little overboard IMO, but it's her call. I'd let the kid hold on to the ribbon and reinforce that he'll want to earn one on the track at some point, and put him in his place if he starts getting egotistical about something someone else earned.

This is different. My sister is one of the top runners in Louisiana and their entire team got state championship rings for cross country last year. 5 runners scores count, 8 or 9 on the team.

It's one thing to give trophies for teams coming in second or for just playing in a league, but even college teams give rings to all their track athletes when they win conference or a national championship.

He's not on the relay team, not even an alternate.

He'll no he doesn't deserve a ribbon for a race he didn't run.

Now if the team came in first in the meet,he gets the team ribbon but not for an individual race.

If he practiced with the team and made himself and others better by way of competition; then he deserves it. If he was on the "team" but never practiced with them, then I can see the moms side.
