Mom and Dad Afraid of Own Shadows due to Virus

The fear-mongering by the mainstream news outlets, ridiculous posts on social media and word-of-mouth from panicked friends and neighbors over the Coronavirus pandemic has driven my 70-year-old parents off the deep end. I fear they may never be the same again. They self-quarantined at home nearly two-weeks ago and are in no hurry to mingle with anyone, including my children. Their grandkids were their lives and they miss them dearly, but will not allow them into their home until the threat of the virus goes away. This is puzzling and worrisome to me. I’ve never seen my parents like this and doubt they ever fully return to normal because of our twisted culture and media. Is anyone else here experiencing this with elderly parents, now?!

sounds like a classic case of reefer madness

Dude they will return to normal

That’s great. Sounds like they have a wonderful chance of surviving this pandemic. They must really love you to give up so much to make sure they live through this.

are they overweight? if so, they have good reason to be worried

They’re in their 70’s and concerned about a virus that hurts people who may be at risk. I wouldn’t blame them for being precautious. I am little surprised you’re not more concerned for them though.

My M-I-L (no pics) had a bad Katrina experience at Age 64 and never emotionally recovered from it.
Died last year after a long, slow, and terrible decline.
Hope the best for you and yours.

You and your kids will likely be perfectly fine. But you and your kids can easily be the one to pass the virus to your parents. This isn’t fear mongering, this is reality.

Sounds like they're doing the smart thing, you should try it!

I think that they are just using this C19 scare as cover for what they've wanted to do for a long time -- drop kick you and your obnoxious brood of crumb-grabbers out of their lives to get some peace and quiet.
It's the only way they could get you all to stop asking for more money.

Same except mine are 80. I just drop groceries at the door and wave. At least they have each other...grateful for that.

Or they could be looking at the numbers, which aren't opinionated like news channels, and basing their concern off of those factual numbers.

My FIL is basically motivated by drama and fear... always texting 3 day old news snippets and half-correct updates.
Hurricane season in FL during a pandemic is probably his most insane worry fantasy.
I’m convinced his amygdala is like Swiss cheese.

Mine are in their late 70’s and they’re together as well, and super thankful too for that. Both have had complications and I don’t want to put them at risk either. We face time and talk on the phone pretty regular. Until this thing subsides, that’s just life for now.

Sounds like your parents attempted to raise a child to be as smart as them, but failed miserably.

I can certainly relate to that. My mother’s always been one to look for reasons to worry, and this pandemic is like her perfect storm. Earlier tonight she text me a copy of a stranger’s Facebook post warning people not to eat at Little Caesar’s in Gonzales and to get tested for the virus if they had because someone who works there is a supposed carrier. I love my parents dearly, but being up against something like this is troubling.

Sounds like the apple fell far from the tree in this case, dont kill you parents brainiac.

So you are mad because your parents, who are at a higher risk of death from this virus, want to stay away from everybody as to not get sick. And you are also mad because she texted you a warning to avoid a certain thing/person who has been infected in an attempt to keep you and her grandkids as safe as possible.
Yeah, you are the dumb arse here.

I’m not angry, just wondering how they’ll return to the way things were before when they seem so freaked-out, now. I’ve never seen them react this way before. Is that so hard to comprehend, dickhead? shite, you’re taking this thread personally...
