So you believe a person who is working for $7.50 an hour that gets a raise to $15 an hour should get how much in government assistance a year...the same, more, less?

Person goes from making $15,600 a year to $31,200 a year should get $15,600 a year less in government assistance right?

Nice.

It just warms my heart when enablers get bit right in the arse by the monster they helped create.

This is pretty interesting. I had family attend Mizzou in the last decade and have visited a few times, last being about 2010. Never had a negative thought about the place, cool college town, until what happened last fall.

It's pretty awesome to see the rubber hit the road and the free market in place, especially in a state like Missouri--if you think about it is a pretty good indicator of the US as a whole. The state has two big urban areas, lots of rural, hippy college town, religious zealots in mountains, parts identify with south, others identify with midwest. Also, Mizzou, like LSU, is the clear flagship in the state as a land grant and research school with a law school, medical school. Essentially, it's tough to avoid if you want to stay in-state. You're not in Texas or Florida with a lot of other choices. Plus, it's a AAU school.

With all that considered, I think it makes these reductions even more significant.

My wife makes a helluva lot more than that as a first year teacher.

What do you consider a helluva lot? Here's a link to the average starting salary in Georgia. The metro Atlanta schools will range between 40-50,000 but the rural areas get lower.

Average starting salary is $38,900

I think the range varies a lot from parish to parish in La. I wouldn't be surprised if some in La is around 32k to start

A $15/hour minimum is unlikely to result in higher prices because most businesses directly affected by it are in intense competition for consumers, and will take the raise out of profits rather than raise their prices.

Nonsense. They will take it out of operating costs - i.e. cutting locations with smaller profit margins, cutting the quality of components, FIRING FOLKS WHO AREN'T WORTH $15 AN HOUR.

Like we've talked about before, these businesses are run by their owners. You own McDonald's. I own McDonald's. Most folks with a 401k or mutual funds own McDonald's. And their executives don't keep their jobs very long by cutting profits and devaluing the company on the stock market.

quote:

But because the higher minimum will also attract more workers into the job market, employers will have more choice of whom to hire, and thereby have more reliable employees – resulting in lower turnover costs and higher productivity

Or, replace them with robots/kiosks. See, we don't have to speculate what the fast food companies will do in response to this increase. They're doing it. They're firing people.

So, the choice was a job at the old minimum or unemployment at the new one. Some Millenials are increasingly choosing the latter - and to their own detriment, IMHO.

And that only accounts for thd big multimillion dollar companies. The mom and pops businesses (like mine) would probably be looking at a 25% layoff of work force or shutting the doors completely if that wasn't possible.

They will have to take prices as well. Inflation will do what inflation usually does. At some point your $15/hr is equivalent to $7.50 again and they are right back where they started. Basic economics is such an oppressive force.

I feel like LSU would be dumb enough to follow their path.

Or members of the military starting off, or so many more.

fricking hilarity, because none of these other industries are going to see pay bumps, yet prices for everything we buy on a daily basis sure will increase.

Exactly. And those on fixed salaries (teachers, state workers, etc) would be even more screwed than the business owners.
