My kid has an older tv with no HDMI imports. She has an older roku with a/v cord, and her grandmother recently gave her an older hand me down dvd player with a/v cord.

TV only has one A/V jack. No problem, I'll just get a splitter.

Could not find anywhere locally. So, i ordered it from Amazon prime. $10 bucks, it said it was an RCA brand. They had a bunch of brands that I did not recognize for $5-$6 bucks, so I went with the brand I knew.

Almost two weeks later, it shows up. The package is 100 percent in Chinese, but the splitter itself has english words on it. Works so far, but feels and looks like a piece of crap.

Not only the availability of product.
But, they actually employed people who knew what they were doing.

In 1985. Radio shack was total crap the last time I went there. I was bombarded by cell phones salesman and the other employee argued with me over the cable I needed. He insisted on selling me a $100 box so I left and went to Walmart for the $8 cable.

I did this years ago. RS used to be great a long long time ago.

The big chains like Beat Buy don’t even have the accessories for the products they sell.

I know right. Went by Best Buy to get a new cable for my external hard drive. They didn't have any even though they carry the same brand of hard drive.

My dad loved Heathkit. He built all our stereos and TVs growing up. Still have a couple of the receivers and they work great. He was into HAM radio too so we spent a lot of time at Radio Shack. The guys that worked there knew their stuff and were always enthused to help. Like others have said this was back in the 80's though. It basically became a glorified cell phone retailer after the mid 90's.

It was a different time and one I miss greatly when you could walk into a retail establishment and get prompt, courteous, and knowledgeable service.

I feel your pain. No one else carries small electronic parts. Sure Amazon is cheaper, but same day was nice

I do too. The first TV I remember my family having was a
Heathkit color 24 inch my dad built. That thing lasted us until I was in my teens. My dad was an electronics tech, and he bought so much stuff from them. I really miss the days of watching him work on stuff.

You can thank all of the lazy bastards who only order via Amazon because they can save $1.25 on that cable.

For most cords Amazon is half as cheap.

I do miss RS too. Hated it those last few years where it was just a cell phone store. Luckily I live near Orlando and they have an amazing place called Skycraft which is an electronics hobby parts and surplus store. I go in to buy a small motor or something, and come out with 20 different items and 3 new projects in mind. Lots of stuff you never knew you needed.

The ones here in Huntsville, Al are both gone: W&W and Mock's electronics.
I made my own crossover when I was in high school with stuff purchased from Mock Electronics.

I miss actual stores with “experts” you could talk with.

Car stereo, electronics, auto parts, hardware, you name it. It just isn’t the same.

I worked at a RS back in the late 90s. I knew some things, but when people would come in with a mathematical equation for what resistor they needed I would just point them to the back of the store.

I used to piddle with electronics’ projects and would get everything from wire to resisters, diodes, etc. RS had everything. I miss them too!

I miss the Incredible Universe store in Dallas. It was Radio Shack on crack.

It's a Fry's now.

However, I will say that Best Buy's turnaround as a company has been impressive.
Just as an FYI, Best Buy has a pretty good price match policy. They'll price match brick and mortar stores including their websites and they'll match Amazon as long as its shipped/sold by Amazon and not one of the 3rd party retailers that sells on Amazon. Just pull the item up on your phone and show the cashier

Yeah, sometimes you can find an old school electronics or hardware store to get some basic components but I've gotten used to ordering on Adafruit now. I've even found obscure components for German dental lathes for pennies a piece.
