Are trails in Utah ok for folks who aren’t used to altitude? My son and his family are headed somewhere there (he’s got camping and hiking experience in national parks), but she doesn’t, nor does their 2 year old. I admit I’m kinda nervous about them going. They won’t be hiking in back country, if that makes a difference. Have just seen several instances of murders in park son trails lately so it is concerning.

Bighorn. Is this what he scaled? And had 2 hours to descend?

While I agree, I also think you need to be smarter about the hikes you take. This sounds like an extreme hike, so it is a bit selfish in that regard.

I have passed on risky outings the last several years for the sole reason I don’t want to risk leaving my young children fatherless.

Yeah.. I was going up to do a section of the Benton Mackaye trail a few years back and it was snowing pretty good up there. I was dressed for cold weather but snow on a trail is a great way to tear up an ankle or break a leg, so I enjoyed the views from the road and bailed on the hike.

Did Frozen Head mountain solo this morning, but it's a nice Saturday so never went more than about 30 minutes without crossing paths with someone... several people out there training for next year's Barkley Marathons.

If you are hiking solo remotely, not sure why you would not have a PLB or Satellite Messenger. Certainly not foolproof, particularly if something sudden happens. But I would want the chance to let it save me.

1 - food
2 - water (and water treatment like a filter)
3 - clothing (not just what you're wearing, but an extra jacket, rain shell, hat, gloves, etc. somewhat seasonal/environmental dependent)
4 - navigation - map & compass, gps
5 - sun protection - sunglasses, sunscreen, hat
6 - fire starter
7 - knife/multi tool
8 - light source - headlamp, flashlight
9 - 1st aid kit
10 - emergency shelter - a tarp, a bivy or emergency bag

personally i'd add a pen and notepad - being able to leave a msg could be crucial. also don't rely on it, but have your phone. and let someone know where you're going and when you plan to be back. don't forget to let them know when you get back!

Thank you. Very helpful. Not planning on tackling anything near this level anytime soon, and not solo, but good to know.

A couple of trail maps I have seen. There is supposed to be some kind of primitive trail to cloud peak’s summit.

Below is a smaller image for one trail map as embedding picture directly not showing for me here.

Is that actually Cloud Peak? I have not seen a picture from an angle showing such a steep side. It’s surrounded by other peaks and high ground. I have been trying to find some pics from the trail, but I don’t know if he was returning the same way towards Mistymoon lake.

Big Horns are huge and wild. I saw my first moose there, man at first I thought it was horse that got loose. Then I saw a bull moose...I stopped driving, it was standing on a side road, and turned around and man it was so big.

I'd go back in a second. Never made it over to Yellowstone either, but camping in the Big Hors was awesome

That’s not hiking. That’s climbing. Two different things.

for a guy who seems to do this frequently, those things should be as standard as hiking boots, especially when going alone.

My guess is he fell somewhere.

sadly - I think you have ID'd the primary cause/outcome of this one.

I am not even sure a solo hiker can qualify for Missing 411, but if they find his clothes neatly folded on a rock in some area they have already searched 12 times might make it.

A Sasquatch would be the least of my worries if I was a solo hiker. They like to stay hidden. He should have watched the 200 episodes of Mr Ballen dealing with missing abs murdered hikers and campers
