And this is the daily reminder of td being a SELA centric millennial internet forum.

13k mountains are not exactly Everest.

Solo hiking isn’t the issue here. Time management is. Reaching the summit at 7pm is kind of crazy if you’re expecting to go back down that same day.

General rule of thumb at least on the 12k and 13k hikes I have done in New Mexico and Colorado is summit before noon or face thunder storms above treeline. Summiting at 7pm is a bold strategy.

He should have watched the 200 episodes of Mr Ballen dealing with missing abs murdered hikers and campers

Has always seemed like the perfect target for a psychopath looking to murder someone and get away with it. Especially females that do this. At least as a male, they'll probably just kill you.

No kidding, but they can still be very dangerous at night and when exhausted.

Mountain height is only part of the consideration. Mt. Washington in NH is 6,300’ and can be an extremely dangerous mountain due to its weather.

From sea level to 13k. Weather changing…..good luck.

I lived at 9500 before I started hiking those elevations. You get winded fast plus elevation sickness. Drink a lot of water. A lone Mountain Lion or bear is possible. Rattlesnake all the way up to mid Montana. Something got him and it wasn’t Sasquatch, or Aliens. He crossed the wrong path.

We’ve seent em all the way up in Missoula.

And 13/14k feet is no joke. Could easily get disoriented and dehydrated.

Lived in Cheyenne. After a year, it’s not tough to wander all over Wyoming and Montana. Pike’s Peak was a breeze.

Last year or the year before a guy soloed a remote peak in Yellowstone. He made it to the top because he signed the summit register, but never made it back to the trailhead. AFAIK they've never found a trace of him.

Probably fell and body got wedged somewhere inaccessible.. if it was wildlife there would probably be signs. Gear, clothes, etc.

Or, do it like I did, take the trips early, and get it out of your system before you get married and have kids.

Isn't Cheyenne's elevation around 6,100 feet? I seem to remember seeing it on the city limits sign and thinking it was about 1,000 feet higher than Denver.

I thought most of the cities/towns with permanent residents that were over 9k were all in Colorado (Leadville, Breckenridge, Nederland, etc.)

Everything north is higher.

I've driven much higher in the Rockies.

Get off the highways and see how high you go.

Most folks think they’ve seen the area from a four lane highway.

Rural doesn’t scare me at all. Especially since I’ve hunted most of it.

Getting lost in Tokyo because I lost my notes on the bus and train signs…..spooked me. Surrounded by 38 million Japanese. Sat down figured out my way home.

Without at the minimum a 10mm? The way a mountain lion can track without ever being spotted just waiting for you to frick up would be the only convincing I needed to pack some heat. However, I probably wont be summiting a 13k ft mountain at 7pm alone any time soon either.
