siding with Scruffy on this, I just looked up prices in what was a very nice neighborhood near where I grew up, home prices are reasonable, and the lots are decent sized but I also looked up the crime stats in that area and I believe that is what is keeping the prices down
This supposed $150k home ends up being in the literal ghetto with horrendous crime and a school district that doubles as a prison.

So where should folks find a house that is under 1500 square feet with 3 bedrooms (parents and two kids) and one bath for less than 250K?
Just live in the ghetto. Or commute 2 hours every day.
Kids today are spoiled.

It may be just me, but $33,350 is almost $35,000. I get it, that's MSRP and all. But they aren't cheap and more expensive than things were in the '80's.
Here's a brand new one being advertised for 32. I bet you can get them down to 30 or 31. LINK

As someone on this board for a while I remember in the engineering threads 15 years ago the boomers would complain that the new grads were starting at 75k when they had to work for 50k as a new grad back in 1982
What does a new engineering grad start at now? 85k? Also consider that getting a degree at lsu was basically free 15 years ago and now it’s like 100k
depends on what type of engineering but in general 85 is a decent starting number for many if its in the plants or services the plants. for outside of those industries....that would be high.

That's actually funny as hell that you think that. Who's running Afghanistan these days?
Also don't ever tell anyone you volunteered for the military. Doing so advances the stereotype that military members are dumb.

yes there are and in good school districts i fully acknowledge though that for 75% of the country this is not a reality but there are places along i-10 that still have them but your overall point is correct
I feel like if you’re talking about places between Lafayette and the texas line I don’t believe you on the “good schools”
There’s a reason for cheap real estate in Louisiana that negatively affects schools

I just watched a developer in our neighborhood group justify building townhomes about 5 minutes from my house starting at 400k.
real estate pricing is really ooc, lots of variables, when I met my eventual wife she had recently bought a villa in foreclosure for about $35k, it was a completely trashed out pig sty, she refurbished that place, pretty much by herself and she won't let me sell it, it Zillows for just under $400k(just under 900 sq.',) and it's been rented continuously for almost 25 years for about $2500/mo.(currently)

Hopefully there isn't anyone left over there capable of another 911 attack on US soil. So, if you think we went over there for nothing you can F right off.
If you enjoy terrorism, then yeah we did nothing over there.

na, i mean sulphur isnt a bad school and i just looked at a couple houses there, brand new for 150k.
there are other places though like in moss bluff and even parts of lake charles and westlake. plenty of places around lafayette too.
there are some in setx too.
point was though....its possible, not probable for the most part so people rent, which drives that market up too

I think half of you guys aren't willing to do what it takes.
Doing what it takes?
We are out here doing what it takes. It takes a hell of a lot more and you get a hell of a lot less. Not everyone who is younger is out here chasing their “dream job”. My friends and I are CPAs, lawyers, and engineers. We are making it now. But comparably to previous generations, it’s not going nearly as far.
This is like putting weights in the shoes of the people at the 2026 NFL combine, then telling them it their own fault they didn’t run faster in the 40 yd dash
