Millions of acres of damaged farmland across Iowa can be seen from space after a deadly derecho blasted across the Midwest earlier this week.

The storm system tore from eastern Nebraska across Iowa and parts of Wisconsin and Illinois, leaving behind a swath of destruction over its nearly 800-mile trek.

The National Weather Service (NWS) forecast office in Des Moines said that a pass by NASA's Terra Satellite revealed swaths of crop damage.

Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds said early estimates indicate 10 million acres have been damaged in the nation’s top corn-producing state and many grain bins were destroyed. That's nearly a third of the roughly 31 million acres of land farmed in the state sustained damage from the derecho.

The most significant damage is to the corn crop, which is in the advanced stages of development, nearly a month away from the beginning of harvest.

That's insane. I knew the winds were very heavy, but not like that.

I’m not gonna lie, I’ve never heard the term “derecho”.

So I learned something today. Thanks OP.

According to the NOAA, a derecho is a widespread, long-lived wind storm that is associated with a band of rapidly moving showers or thunderstorms.

"Although a derecho can produce destruction similar to that of tornadoes, the damage typically is directed in one direction along a relatively straight swath," the NOAA states. "As a result, the term 'straight-line wind damage' sometimes is used to describe derecho damage."

In order for a cluster of thunderstorms to be defined as a derecho, a wind damage swath must extend for more than 240 miles and include wind gusts of at least 58 mph along most of its length.

r/wallstreetbets is retarded. I hope you don’t take advice from them.

Also does anyone remember when a derecho hit Baton Rouge in 2015? That was pretty crazy.

No corn for the ducks/geese. Hunters down here will have only the nets and heated ponds to blame now

I was in the middle of one a couple of years ago. One of those hot nights where it hardly cools off at all. A wind came up out of nowhere and blew hard for about 30 minutes, like when a line of thunderstorms come through. Knocked out power all over town.

Actually just the opposite, there will be tons of corn that can’t be harvested so more food for ducks. They’ll bitch regardless, but this will probably not help the hunting here by any means.

Time to retaliate against China and make sure there is enough rain to make that dam break.

Good, maybe the government should stop subsidizing corn production for the shitty ethanol that they insist on pushing. Ethanol money runs politics in the Midwest
