Depends on the restaurant really. I've gotten chicken sandwiches before at BWW and it was literally a frozen chicken patty. It looked nothing like a piece of actual chicken.
I know they aren't microwaving the entire meal, but a good number of chains are getting everything from Sysco and just combining and heating.
If a restaurant has a 5 page menu there is no way they can make everything to-order, there would be way too much prep work and a ridiculous amount of waste.

Is the issue really how much walmart profits, or is it that many of their workers are under-employed, possibly underpaid, and in many cases, require governmental financial aid which they spend at walmart?

Last two times I dined at Buffalo Wild wings the service was terrible and the food was mediocre for the price. Not sure millennials are to blame here.

Plus, where can you live that doesn't have small local restaurants, and at least more localized chains?
I'll take pluckers over buffalo.

I am all for a small increase in minimum wage but not jumping to $15 / hour. If they don't like their current situation, Wal-mart does provide things like scholarships, managers in training, etc. Or if not through them, go elsewhere to learn a new skill that pays more than minimum wage. Fast food workers and general walmart employee positions are not supposed to be a long term thing. My mom when she was going to school a million years ago worked 3 jobs, including working at a grocery store, to put herself through school and pay her bills. I will never support a $15 minimum wage.
Minimum wage is $7.25.. There is no way bumping it up to $15 would work. That is more than doubling the current minimum wage. I think it should be bumped up a little.. No more than $8.50.. But going up to $15 would disrupt the cost of living.

It is a mixture of both yes and no. No, they aren't heating up plates of food like a TV dinners, but plenty of things are not made in a quality manner. This thread has been done on Reddit and people who have worked everywhere from Applebees to PF Changs chimed in with their experience.
For example:
Applebees
quote:
whenever someone wanted to order a "medium rare" steak, and I had to say we only make them "pink" or "no pink." That's because most of the kitchen is a row of microwaves. The steaks were cooked on a stove top, but then microwaved to death. Pink or no pink only referred to how microwaved to death you want your meat.
Taco Bell
quote:
The beans were dehydrated and in plastic bags like coco pebbles cereal. There were always two big pots of hot water. One pot was to add water to the beans, and the other pot was for heating the bags of ground beef, chicken, and steak
Chili's
quote:
people used to ask for the queso recipe all the time...it's delivered to the restaurant in a bag
quote:
I also used to work at Applebees, and can confirm that steaks are microwaved. At the location I was at the cooks threw them on the grill after the microwave to get char marks on them
Most of these aren't the end of the world, but there's no argument that chains are just as comparable quality-wise to local places that are making everything from scratch.

This actually makes me glad. I would much rather patronize authentic and unique local restaurants rather than completely generic chains like these. Fast food is one thing because it serves a certain purpose but these medium to upper medium level restaurants are terrible. One of the things I like about New Orleans is they've done a good job of eschewing places likes these.

BWW's is one of the worst chains I've ever had food at. Specifically the one on LSU's campus.

I am agreeing. I think Yoga girl is out of her mind to think workers with absolutely zero skills deserves that or the companies could support that.

Exactly. Chains are more worried about their name and it being a place people are familiar with and feel comfortable going to than the quality of the food.
Like I said in my earlier post in this thread. When people travel somewhere and they don't really know anywhere else to eat, they want those people to be familiar with their name because they are likely going to go somewhere they have heard than a place they have not.

No argument there but people on this site insist that most major chains are just reheating and not actually cooking any of the food which is not true.
Posted on 6/12/18 at 3:58 pm to mouton
I'm mostly a food snob, but I can find things I like at most any chain. I enjoy the dry rubs at BWW, specially if they mix the hottest two for me.
Posted on 6/12/18 at 4:02 pm to mouton
In the defense of chains, people should realize that some food has to be made ahead and reheated. This isn't necessarily a bad thing. You think they're whipping up fresh lasagna or gumbo when you visit a local restaurant? Of course not. Both of those items take over an hour to prepare.
I can tell you now that any of those local joints with stuffed/twice baked potatoes (Sammys, Mike A's, Dempseys, etc.) are popping your potato in the microwave with a handful of cheese on top to disguise it.

Also a local place is more likely to be getting stuff from Sysco(especially appetizers) than a place like Olive Garden who is going to get their stuff from a centralized corporate location.

The one in Gonzales is run by the functionally retarded

Who wants to go to Applebees alone?

Proud to be contributing to the downfall of these god awful restaurants

When you go to a local place and they have things like mozzarella sticks on the app menu, 90%+ chance they are frozen out the box. Same can be said for a few other items that pop up on restaurant menus a lot. Even if they are slightly higher quality than the frozen food section of the grocery store, I wouldn't order it.
No obviously you can look around the restaurant and see how it is kept up, decor, etc and get a good guess if they use frozen products.

Yep. We actually made ours at the restaurant I worked in, but a lot of places don't. Also a TON of places buy premade desserts. "Turtle Cheesecake" is a dead giveaway.
Luckily, this is really dying out. It used to be rampant in local places, especially small casual ones catering to old people.

I read an article about even a Thomas Keller restaurant using desserts from Sysco. People don't realize that Sysco also carries very high end products. Shoot you can get Kobe beef and foie gras sourced from Sysco.
