I love the 3-5-3 defense in middle school football.
The 3 DL are really a nose guard and 2 defensive tackles with no contain responsibilities just attack the gap.
Behind them are 5 linebackers and the 2 outside linebackers are your defensive ends with contain responsibilities.
The number 1 way a defense gets hurt in middle school football is allowing the ball to get to the outside.
A 3-5 protects the outside better than a 4-4. Teams might be able to get 3 yards up the middle but most middle school teams can't execute well enough to get 6 first downs before scoring.
A 3-5 prevents the homerun.
