Actually even in the South there are places that can arrest you for having a loaded gun in the passenger compartment of your vehicle. Unless it recently changed, Alabama was one such state.

I'm sure if we restricted the gun rights of all such people on these lists they would never be abused to further a gun control agenda

If and WHEN Progressives get their way (eventually they will, they always do), it will be anyone that goes against their narratives, is religious, or votes R.
When they finally get to take guns away, they will come after their political enemies first. Those who commit the vast majority of gun crimes vote for them, so they won't touch them at all. They will allow their foot soldiers free reign. You can count on that.
