In all fairness to the guy, I saw an interview right after the movie came out where he said "that's not how any of it happened."

But it's Hollywood so there was zero shock with his statement.

Guy got out of the projects and made millions. So there is that.

quote:

I know what type of player I am. Everybody else that I know knows what type of player I am. So that kind of stuff doesn’t worry me,' Oher said.

Well, you filing a lawsuit kind of says otherwise.

So at 18 (when he was legally an adult) he thought that he was signing adoption papers?

What does all this say about Michael Lewis? How deep did he really dig when writing the book?

70% to 80% of all NFL players go broke after their career. When you’re 18 and some NFL team executive is waving a contract for $10 million+ a year in your face, how the frick do you process that

Which is mind-boggling. I’m pretty sure I could live the rest of my life comfortably if someone just gave me a year or two of the average NFL salary.

That's what he claims he thought-that he was being adopted and would be a member of the family. Adults can be adopted at 18 or older, so it's not a stretch that he trusted what they told him and didn't read the paperwork.

According to the article I read on ESPN, this only came to light in Feb 2023 and, apparently, he was very hurt by it. I'm not sure when he knew the Touhys were getting money and he was getting nothing. IF that's the case, IMO, it's patently unfair to him. I hope they have to pay up.

I haven't found anything indicating he's broke. Sounds more like he's hurt than broke to me.

Without them I highly doubt he would have anything more than 3 hots and a cot, or a permanent resting place 6 feet under the dirt.

Did they profit, no doubt. I bet he profited way more though.

we'll wait and see their Answer. Wonder if he's attempted to contact them since he's been out of the NFL?

He’s not broke… he’s a married father of 3 who lives in Brentwood TN, one of the wealthiest zip codes in the southeast.

I mean, he is well-researched, but that's not a thing you normally triple check. They said he was adopted. He thought he was adopted. Good journalism (and I consider Lewis one of the better sports journalists) usually requires receipts, but only when a fact is in dispute.

Well, the truth is, he'd likely be nobody if it weren't for the Tuohys. He deserves to be paid fairly for that movie, but it sounds like he really just wants some money because he is broke and wants a chunk of the family's estate (if he was legally adopted)...which is kind of absurd considering how much he already made in the NFL, which like I said, would not have happened if it weren't for the Tuohys.

He is a piece of shite tho… he got kicked out of a rec league basketball game in Franklin a couple months ago for being an a-hole to the refs.

He also assaulted an Uber driver several yrs ago.

Is it though? Many of these guys grew up very poor and most people don’t realize that around 60% of their paychecks go to taxes, agents, etc. you sign for $10 mil you are lucky to get $5 mil or more depending on your state taxes. You go buy momma house, you a car, and before you know it that rookie money is gone.

Especially the guys that don’t sign big 2nd contracts because by that time they have matured with their taste and financial sense. That rookie contract front loaded is easy to go by by.

Most of the stories of lower level guys that are now really well off saved 80% or more of their take home pay and basically lived like a normal upper middle class person their first couple of years. Then they signed a 2nd contract and even on the low end those vet contracts are pretty big money, $10-30 mil guaranteed. If you can sock away $10-15 mil by 28 or so you are set for life.

The subtext to this is he THOUGHT he was adopted which would make him a legal child and thus able to inherit money from the Tuohys who are fairly wealthy apparently - Taco Bell’s and all.

But he’s not family and he ain’t getting a damn tostada without paying for it. So he’s probably pretty pissed that the Tuohys made a lot of money of him but he isn’t getting anything from them.

Probably should be settled by cutting him in on a child’s share of the estate. Which is probably going to piss Sean off.

That does not fit the “victim” narrative being created.
