If this were to happen, how would it affect Mexican cartel activity in the US?

Mexico City (AFP) - Mexican President-elect Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador has given his future interior minister "carte blanche" to explore the possibility of legalizing drugs in a bid to curb violent crime, she said Tuesday.
Olga Sanchez Cordero, a former Supreme Court judge tapped to lead the interior ministry, drew applause when she made the comment at a university seminar on addressing brutal violence fueled by Mexico's drug cartels, the biggest suppliers to US consumers of cocaine, heroin and other narcotics.

On the subject of decriminalizing drugs, Andres Manuel told me, and I quote: 'Carte blanche. Whatever is necessary to restore peace in this country. Let's open up the debate,'" said Sanchez Cordero.

Would likely take both countries to legalize narcotics to have any effect.

Honestly, with the amount of murder that happens from Mexico over drugs, i am perfectly fine with this.

Guarantee one of the cartels is backing this with promises that they will get government benefits if this goes through

They still need American money to fund these enterprises. Mexicans don't have any money in the first place to buy any drugs, and if they did, the cartel wouldn't have turned the U.S. Mexican border into a 3rd world looking shithole.

Drugs are pretty much already legal in Mexico. The only time the cops will frick with you over drugs is if they're trying to extort you for a few bucks.

Mexico's new president is horrible.

I don't know. Seems like the cartels would support this outright. They get free reign to run drugs without getting hassled by the federales and still get to ship to the US and make money with less overhead for bribes.

Do you know how much "tourism" would come to Mexico for this stuff? Bachelor party galore. Guys "fishing" trips down to Mexico for long weekends. Hell yeah!

i'm sure you've done extensive research into the policy proposals and platform of the Mexican president-elect.

Let the cartel build resort towns near airport or the borders for the drug tourism. They would make so much money with out the hassle.

yeah but if you are the only permitted grower and distributor...makes things easier
I'm sure they all would support it, but I would be shocked if deals and promises are not being made

the fact he is in favor for governmental price controls should be a cause for concern
