Let the cartel build resort towns near airport or the borders for the drug tourism. They would make so much money with out the hassle.
Thst would make a lot of sense truthfully. Casino resorts over the border with free booze and could buy weed legally? Coke? Tourism would be massive. Each cartel could get a state border. Provide gringos a safety assurance? Profit. Would probably dwarf Vegas dollars in the long term.

The only time the cops will frick with you over drugs is if they're trying to extort you for a few bucks.
No shite. We were in Cancun several years ago, and the cops bust in our hotel room one night while we're sitting around a granite table drinking beer. One of the cops comes over to where I'm sitting, notices some white in the pattern on the table, points and says, "What is this, cocaine!?!" I just rubbed the spot with my finger and said, "No, man, it's the table."

Only if they can be guaranteed no competition for their specific territories.
That could be part of it. The other part could be that the territories stay the same but the feds stay out of the drug busting game. Either way, there will still be massive corruption and violence and Mexico will remain a poor shithole.

i'm sure you've done extensive research into the policy proposals and platform of the Mexican president-elect.
I've spoken with several Mexicans from well-to-do families recently and they are not happy about the president elect. Some of us actually communicate with people from other countries from time to time and discuss what's happening in their countries. I'm fairly well traveled and when I travel I enjoy speaking with and learning about the people in the country I'm visiting. I don't plop down in an all-inclusive and hide my head in the sand.

If it is still illegal here, it means the big money is still there to be made. Therefore there will still be a competition and killing.

t I would be shocked if deals and promises are not being made
No different than anything really. There would absolutely be some rent seeking by the cartels

Mexicans don't have any money in the first place to buy any drugs
They have plenty of oil. You must be thinking of only the poor farmer types. There are also white collar professionals with plenty of pesos.

Drastically less if they are given legal avenues to settle differences. Cartels don’t want to be killing people or paying for labor to do so.

So you are suggesting that the Mexican government settle disputes for cartels to run drugs into our borders ?

If drugs were legal there, why wouldn’t they? Two companies acting rationally is preferable to several daily murders
Let’s just assume all else stays equal which I know is not realistic because that would be the end of all friendly US/mex relations

Do you know how much "tourism" would come to Mexico for this stuff? Bachelor party galore. Guys "fishing" trips down to Mexico for long weekends. Hell yeah!
So it would be exactly how it already is

You don't need a security detail when you are in the cartel's pocket and they protect you.

Just giving the country to the cartels
