Good Metal ones go from $600-$1000 and can be moved when I retire to my cabin
Brick looks good, would be inexpensive but take some hard work to make

I've got a metal one like you have in the picture, and I love it. There is nothing like grilling a few rib-eyes on an open wood flame or coal bed. Also, the metal one flips up on its side and can be rolled into different spots in the yard or placed in the barn during summer.

My dad built a rectangular brick pit in the middle of his courtyard. It looks better than any metal pit I have seen. Plus the bricks hold heat. Make sure you line the inside with crack-free bricks (or heat resistant, whatever they are) if you go that route.

Go to Brian's in Port Allen. Buy one of the mini cast iron sugar kettles. They have a 3-4 foot diameter. Get someone to make a stand and style it how you want. Total cost should be less than 600$. I did it and started a thread on here looking for a metal fab shop willing to help me. They put fleur d'lis on my stand and made it really nice. (It was a Christmas present for Mrs Corleone)

doesn't seem too difficult

Cup the brick in your hand, keeping your fingers below the top edge of the brick. (Our mason doesn't use gloves, but we suggest you do!) Give the brick a solid tap (a very solid tap for firebrick) on the outside edge near the center hole. Avoid hitting your hand. Repeat 79 times.
I'm going for a metal one

Materials will be less than $200 and labor about $150 if I hire some of trumps favorite work force

I built a 3ft x 3ft square (inner measurements) with these bricks from Lowes 2 years ago. Used 64 bricks (16 per layer, 4 layers high) and bought 70 so I'd have spares just in case I dropped one or one cracks in the future. Used some concrete adhesive found on the silicone/adhesives aisle at Lowes to hold it all together. Spent a total of about $275 after tax.
Although I didn't have any issues with it for a year, just to ease my mind about the heat possibly getting to and cracking the bricks, I bought these 12" x 12" metal, interlocking panels off ebay last year to line the inner walls of the pit. The seller sells them in kits of 8 panels, but if you contact him he will add as many more panels as you'd want for an additional cost. CAMPFIRE PORTABLE FIRE PIT RING
So all total, I have about $375 into the pit.

At our annual national rally this past year one of the vendors that we had set up was a guy who made these amazing custom made metal fire pits. They were very impressive but his prices were like $1,500 and up. Here's so examples similar to his work....
I know he sold a at least a couple of them. And they look really cool. But it's still just a fire pit. I'd make one out of bricks. You're out there to enjoy the fire, not the pit.

Benefit to having a metal one is that you can move it out of the way when you're not using it

Brick, unless you want one portable.
Metal pits look like an afterthought IMO.

Here is mine. It's made out of a 150 gallon propane tank. A friend of mine makes them and can do just about any design you like.

Very nice, and creative using the adhesive vs mortar

This one?
I bought one just like it there to keep in my camper. I like that when we're done with it I can dump the ashes, spray it off, put it in a large garbage bag, and store it in my camper.
