Mental health clinicians will start answering some 911 calls in Chicago — instead of cops

For the first time in Chicago, some 911 calls for mental health emergencies won’t be answered by police officers but by mental health professionals paired with paramedics.

In one pilot program starting this fall, a paramedic will be dispatched with a mental health clinician for “behavioral health calls.” In another, a paramedic will work with a “recovery specialist” on calls involving substance abuse.

Mental health clinicians will be on hand at the 911 center to monitor situations, but questions remain how well these new responders will be able to de-escalate violence that can erupt during such calls.

The “alternative response” programs are being launched amid continuing debate over the role of police after the killing of George Floyd by a Minneapolis police officer last spring.

Chicago began incorporating crisis intervention training several years ago after the highly publicized cases of teenagers Laquan McDonald and Quintonio LeGrier, who were both apparently experiencing mental episodes when they were shot and killed by officers responding to 911 calls.

The pilot programs go further by emphasizing a “public health approach” to responding to 911 calls, city officials say.

“We’re super excited,” said Alex Heaton, Mayor Lori Lightfoot’s policy adviser for public safety. “This is a brand new workforce for the city, and it’s an exciting opportunity to use a public health approach for people likely to come in contact with the first responder system.”

Maybe someone struggling with suicidal ideation would be better served talking to a professional?

It’s not like Chicago PD isn’t dealing with other shite all the time

This is part of what people mean when they say ‘defund the police’.

I guarantee you that the Chicago PD, much like most PDs of any size, already has mental health professionals on the payroll. The problem is that they cannot go in until the scene is secured, you know......by police officers.

I don't see why this is a bad thing. I am sure there are lots of 911 calls that could and should be handled by this kind of thing. As long as the police are still handling the shite they should be handling, I don't see why this would be such a big deal.

Yes police are sent on mental health calls and they sometimes end up killing the people. But NOT because the police are just randomly killing people but because the person experiencing the mental health crisis presented behavior that threatened the lives of the police. For instance, shooting at someone or trying to stab them.

So someone needs to explain to me how non-police are going to handle that situation? Do they think they are going to talk a gun or knife out of the hand of a crazy person like in the movies? I think they are just going to end up dead.

I think this is okay, as long as they can confirm that the call is someone dealing with mental health issues, and not someone shooting it up on a Saturday night.

White liberals want to defund the police because it keeps blacks from receiving protection. White progressives prefer scared blacks instead of happy blacks

This situation isn’t a bad thing though regarding OP

That likely works better for everyone involved. Going off the word “some” of the calls will be answered by mental health professionals. Mental health is obviously known to be unstable but if you can get a good filtering system figured out for who responds to certain calls it frees up a lot of people needed in other areas. It’s not like the current system is knocking it out of the park these days anyways

On the surface this seems like a good plan, but I think you also have to prepare for someone having a "mental episode" becoming a danger to others.

Might be an improvement if they did this in Baton Rouge.

The 911 and BRPD dispatchers in Baton Rouge are about as sharp as a bowling ball.

Dont police dept have a crisis unit to deal with these calls already?

I NOPD has had one for as long as I can remember....

NOPD Mobile Crisis Unit's mental health technicians who volunteer their time to assist officers in handling incidents involving persons who are possibly suffering from mental illness.

I doubt highly this is what they’re talking about. I would bet in a city of that size that there are lots of people who struggle with suicidality, poorly-controlled bipolar or schizophrenia, or some other type of mental issue. Many of them are often only dangers to themselves.

These demos do have a higher tendency toward violent behavior but the spectrum of psychoses is more complicated than just thinking that everyone diagnosed turns into werewolves and can’t control themselves

Some do, some don’t.

Our local department (not LMPD but our municipality) just added three more mental health positions. They found that the first two worked out really well and it’s also expanded off of their Angel Program which dealt specifically with getting folks in treatment instead of in jail for addiction. They’ll be used for mental health runs and to also facilitate mental health services for the officers themselves.
