I’ve found that when people come to the rant for help we essentially end up with a thread of 1you aren’t the only one. Don’t feel isolated 2this is a horrible place to vent your fears and anxiety go get a pro 3then finally people making light of the situation in diff ways.
But to be honest that’s on u. We already said 1 and 2.

To me, the only thing to do is to keep moving, even if it is tiny steps. I would make a list. Sometimes the first thing would be "turn on computer." Sometimes that is the only thing I could get done for an hour. It was that bad. But getting that done and scratching it off the list got me moving.

This is great advice and could go on the list with "do the boring things".

Taking the win over small accomplishments in the right direction is so helpful to turn your attitude around. And is also something your depression can convince you is trivial.

Depression is best fought when regarded as a true opponent and not a by product of other life events that you need to wait out.

A couple thoughts after reading people's responses:

1. Thanks for not letting me down with the expected downvotes and jokes about mental health. It's what makes this place the special corner of the internet that it is. Thick skin recommended in my field and in this place.

2. Yes, I used AI to help put my thoughts in order. It's a great tool. I can speak my thoughts into my phone and they don't have to be in the right order, and this tool can arrange them in a logical format. But the thoughts are mine.

3. Someone mentioned the "wokeification" of the therapy field (my word, not the specific word used by the other poster). This is an unfortunate reality. Many people in the field should not be providing assistance to others because they can't get themselves and their own issues out of the way. And yes, many female therapists buy into the idea that men are the problem. Its' why guys want to come see me instead of them.

4. There is still a stigma attached to mental health issues, although it has gotten a hell of a lot better in recent years. Interestingly, the same dynamics that have led to the field being captured by young people with no life experience have led to this lessening of the stigma. See tiktok and instagram "therapy" content.

Mass produced therapy doesn't seem to be working.

I would never go to a therapist unless it was a male. Women should only go to female therapist also.

Why should you determine what sex therapist someone should see? What a ridiculous statement.

Me and my mom were in an accident and she passed away and I was struggling with grief and guilt bad. Having nightmares every night. Saw a local place and a female was a specialist in grief. So went to see her and talked with her once or twice a week for a few months and she was wonderful. Gave me some tips and within a month I was not having nightmares anymore or beating myself up daily.

Only time in my life I've ever been to a therapist but I would go back to her in a heartbeat. Guy, girl, whichever one that can help you, that's really all that matters. If you only wanted to see a guy that's fine, but saying everyone should see the same sex counselor is pretty dumb.

Does the couch come with the job or do I need to find a therapist that advertises the couch?

i think it depends on what you're getting help for. counseling for grief is pretty universal.

but what can a female, no matter how much experience and education, tell you about the struggles that men deal with? it's like the 5'3" 115 lbs sportcaster explaining the inner workings of an offensive line. the best she'll ever have is an academic understanding.

A guy's therapy should be...his hobby. Play golf, hunt, fish, hike, work with your hands, grow food, raise animals, collect coins, etc.

dude no frick man needs a therapist, they need testosterone, steak and the fricking gym and a blow job

therapist are fricking quacks that do nothing but make you think its not your fault....

your wife leaves you to frick the personal trainer....ok....go frick her sister.

last thing you want to do is feel sorry for yourself and the next thing you dont do is go see a fricking therapist so they can arse rape you for 200 an hour

if this offends some of the pussies of the OT....good, stop being a pussy, get your arse in the gym and become the ultimate 40 year old chad then go frick all your ex wifes friends

What if you’re not able to enjoy those things, even if you’d like nothing more than to enjoy them?

is that actually common though? have you heard from other guys to buck up and get over it? have you told that to other guys? i'm in arguably one of the most alpha male dominated lines of work there is, and the overwhelming message both officially and informally among the bros is "get help if you need help" and "call me any time day or night if you need something". no one has ever told me to buck up and get over it when i've been going through it. the opposite in fact.

i tell people to call me all the time if they just need to talk

men do need to talk to other men that are friends

but they dont need to talk to a therapist most of the time.....now maybe the op is different but everyone i know that saw a therapist....got worse.

now to be fair...most saw very feminine male therapist or female therapist

most suffered from low testosterone, were over weight and never exercised nor did they have any real male dominant hobbies

its not that i think males need to be detached emotionally, i just dont think therapy does anything in 99% of cases and i would say in 75%+ of the cases it makes matters worse

The foundation of mental health is being healthy. As long as we are fat and sick, therapy is doing nothing but putting a bandaid on a gunshot wound.

exactly

and its why i tell everyone that is feeling depressed

1) get their diet in order
2) start lifting
3) get hormones checked
4) go hunt, fish or play golf for a whole weekend away
5) if possible come and get a blow job or go frick, hopefully something random or role play with wife

the last one tends to help despite it being generic bullshite because it makes him feel more like a man

but a therapist will just talk to him and prescribe meds....when the problem is hormonal and being physically unhealthy.

Sometimes that's not enough. I legit do/did everything you mentioned on a regular basis except fish and collect coins but you could add in working out and collect sports cards/memorabilia.

None of those things turned off my brain when I went to bed and stopped nightmares that would leave me sweating and waking up crying in the middle of the night.

Talking to someone who knew how to help stop then did. For all I know I'd still be having them on a regular basis had i not talked to someone.

Not everything is as simple as find a hobby. Some stuff goes deeper than that.
