I have an interesting perspective. My parents divorced at 12 and remarried when I was 20. Their relationship was always cordial and on the surface, you would think they were still married. Dad would come to games, school events, etc and they interacted like any normal parents. When they remarried, it was a surprise, but made a lot of sense to people who knew us/them.

I’m a product of a divorced family and that doesn’t change because my parents got back together when I was an adult. That said, I had an awesome childhood with both parents and I have a different relationship with both parents. Missed a lot of stuff with friends at home, because we went to my Dad’s every other week for 4 years while he was stationed elsewhere. It was hard at times, but he never bailed on us, so we couldn’t bail on him. Hell, sometimes he’d show up from 4 hours away for my sisters 5th grade dance recital. That’s good parenting.

On the topic of relationships turned sour once kids move out, this is my in-laws exactly. My MIL is honestly a complete bitch to her husband. My FIL has spent his whole life proving and he comes home to a negative wife that beats him down every single day. It’s hard to watch and tough for me to be around.

I love both of my parents and they are cordial to each other. They also completely avoid having to see one another.

The problem is, as with all things, the excitement usually fades. Sometimes two people aren't meant to be together and sometimes two people are better off together than they realized when one or both had clouded judgment.

To me, caring for your family is the absolute minimum responsibility in life. Even if you do t like your wife you chose her without a gun to your head. See that crap through.

When are deadbeat dads/fathers who have nothing to do with their kids be held with the same regard?

I already hold them in worse regard. Nothing lower than a man who abandons his family.

Same here.

I had college friend who a few years ago I found out had left his wife and kids for a piece of arse. Basically went from being a good dad to ghosting out of family get-togethers and making excuses for why he couldn't come to his kids' things. Even missed his kid's birthday party last year.

Completely changed how I view him, and I wouldn't give him the time of day now if we ever crossed paths. Those of the actions of a shithead.

They are basically the lowest form of scum on the earth. Those and ones who have kids they don't care from at all.

Depends, is being a huge piece of shite considered a chemical imbalance?

That’s true too

Or in my case when your “so” talks about divorce on a weekly basis for 2-3 years sooner or later it will happen. Apparently her reason for doing so was to spite me bc she was stressed out.

F all that

My wife does absolutely nothing to appease me, I do everything to appease her and the children. I've transitioned to being more demanding about give and take, we'll see where it goes, but I can honestly say I understand in certain situations. You can only be walked on so much as a man. If she wants to make that bed willingly, she can lay in it.

What happens when she changes and is no longer like the woman you married? Do you continue to be miserable and create a toxic environment for your kids?

Goes back to when we lived in caves. Men would do the deed, then the community of women would raise the children. That shite was ingrained in us, and is hard to break.
