[img]It's been almost a month since numbers were drawn for a historically massive Mega Millions game, and the owner of the over $1.5 billion winning ticket had not, at least as of Wednesday, claimed their prize. Meanwhile, a local CBS affiliate reported Monday state lottery officials in South Carolina were urging the mystery person to seek counsel from a financial advisor, sign the ticket, and stash it safely. Really? He/she hasn't come forward in the 24 hours since the OT last had a thread on this?

That’s a lot of moneys to go unclaimed. What if the person dies?

I was on a trip in SC and bought a lotto ticket. I washed it accidentally in my pants pocket.

Good lord man. Give me a break. Interviewing CPA's and attorneys is tough.

I try not to be the grammar police, I really do. I keep my trap shut 99% of the time. But it amazes me at how many subject lines are fricked up. When typing a post you are typically rushing and I can see mistakes being made. But the subject? C’mon man!!!

They had some squabble here in Texas a few years ago with a lottery winner who wanted zero publicity, and the Lottery wouldnt have any of it. The winner ended up forming some kind of trust, and sent his/her Trust Overseer to claim the winnings.

they probably have an attorney who is fronting them money right now so long as it secures their business going forward. i dont think they have to worry about anything right now

Assuming the after tax and lump sum payment was 600mil.... the person has missed out on 1M plus in interest in a month.

This jackpot still hasn't been claimed. The ticket holder has until mid-April - 181 days from the Oct. 23 drawing date - to claim the prize. If the jackpot goes unclaimed, the money will be split among all of the states that participate in Mega Millions.

Is there a tax advantage angle involved here? Is foregoing two months of interest worth deferring the tax liability until April of 2020? I know the more likely explanation is that someone or some group is just being very careful to make sure their affairs are in order before they claim the prize, but I was curious about deferring the tax liability.
