Got a 2017 F-150 Eco Boost. Today on my drive home in stop and go traffic for 15 miles then mainly going around 55 and 70 top speed everything was fine. Pulled in driveway put it in park and fans were running very loud. Turned off popped the hood and noticed coolant was way below the minimum line. Took off the cap and no steam or smoke but coolant came up well below min line. Gauges never moved also. Went get coolant and drive around for 20 minutes but never got above 50 mph. Mainly going around 30 in the neighborhood then 50 on airline. I thought that should heat up engine enough. If anything temp looked lower than before. Opened hood and levels were the same after I filled and no movement when cap removed. Could it just have been that low on coolant

Congrats on getting a shite ton of air into your cooling system.

Turn the heater on for a minute then shut the truck off, betting man says you'll hear bubbles and gurgling.

That’s possible, you’ll need to pressure test the system to see if there’s any leaks. Check your oil to see if there’s coolant in it and check your coolant in the radiator to see if there’s any oil in it….. either of those scenarios are no bueno. When the water pump starts to go out, usually around 150k miles, they slowly weep coolant through a small weep hole so you may not see any coolant until it gets really worn and starts pouring out.

That’s not even fast enough to engage the flux capacitor.

It's possible that your truck was low on coolant and that was the cause of the loud fan noise and lower-than-normal temperature readings. When the coolant level is low, the engine can overheat and cause the fans to run more loudly as they try to cool it down. However, it's also possible that there is another issue at play.

If the coolant level was indeed low, it's important to figure out why it was low in the first place. There may be a leak in the system or some other problem that is causing the coolant to escape. It's also possible that the coolant was simply not filled to the correct level at the last service.

Have the truck inspected by a qualified baw mechanic to diagnose and repair the issue. They can check for any leaks, inspect the cooling system components, and perform a pressure test to ensure that the system is holding pressure correctly.

Do you have a temperature gauge on your dashboard, or just a high temp warning light? Did you see if the temp was high or if the temp light was on?

What do you mean that the fans were loud? The electric fans are designed to come on when the temp is hot (I just mean at normal hot conditions). If the coolant was low, it would be hotter than normal and you might hear the fans on at times when normally they wouldn’t be on.

If the coolant is low, you could have a leak in the system, or something else is causing the engine to overheat, which would cause the coolant to flow back into the overflow reservoir and possibly out of the engine, or push passes the pressurized radiator cap.

If you were able to open the radiator cap right when you got home without coolant spraying out and burning you, it probably wasn’t too hot.

Is that the one when you need to park on an incline and run the engine with the cap off?

Similar scenario to my f 150, closely check the radiator hoses on top of the radiator, seems there is a junction and it is a common spot for a leak, easy fix

Coolant has to be going somewhere. Check for leaks, start with hoses and don’t forget the weep hole on the water pump. If you don’t find any leaks, you need to go to a trusted mechanic.

No light just gauge. Didn’t notice if it was high. I guess filling up to the min line can’t hurt

That’s one way, but many systems are designed with an air purge valve somewhere near the top of the engine.

Factory temp gauges do not follow the actual temp of the coolant. It'll only show hot when it's really hot. Otherwise it will show "normal" temp with the needle never moving while the actual temp of the engine varies as much as 50 degrees.

They are programmed this way because people that don't know anything will bring it to the dealer screaming something is wrong when they see the temp gauge moving all over.

In other words, your temp gauge is just a pretty idiot light.

Get the Torque app for your phone and a bluetooth OB2 plug and you too can watch you actual engine temp go up and down as you stop and go over hill and dale.

That’s a good sign. Even cara with gauges still have temperature warning lights. If you didn’t see the light, then it probably wasn’t overheated. Could still be running a little hot though.

Regarding the coolant level, if we’re talking about the coolant overflow tank and not the radiator itself, you should just add water/coolant and keep an eye on it, especially if you haven’t checked the level in awhile. Some amount of evaporation happens naturally out of that tank as the coolant expands and contracts into and out of the reservoir.

I was speaking of the overflow tank on top the radiator. Ford calls for the orange antifreeze. I just added about 1/2 gallon to get to the min line in the overflow tank

How many miles on the truck?

Has the coolant ever been flushed?
Needs to be done every 30k miles or every 2yrs on your f150
If not I’d be a good idea to bring in and have it done

Let it cool down and then jump start it tomorrow morning to reset the onboard incabulator.

That’s a common “6AJ2” error in Ford Eco Boost parlance.
